background

The shamanic ritual of "feeding the fire" held during Yhyakh, the national Sacha holiday, on the summer solstice

Yakutia, or Sacha as the locals call it, is named after the Yakuts (Sacha) people who are distantly related to the Turks. While most of the sakhas are, at least nominally, Orthodox Christians, there are still many remnants of their ancient religion, Tengriism (a type of sun worship with shamanistic practices). Other aspects of the indigenous Sakha culture have also begun to undergo a revival.

By plane

Yakutsk

Please refer Yakutsk

During the winter there is often fog in Yakutsk, which sometimes lasts for days or weeks. The airport may therefore be closed or the flights may be delayed by several hours. Although Russian airlines land with sometimes surprisingly poor visibility, the conditions are sometimes so bad that even Russian pilots will not try. It is not uncommon for passengers to Yakutsk to stay in Magadan or some other alternative city instead, sometimes for days. The airline's staff are generally not very helpful in providing information on when to travel to Yakutsk and they will not offer hotel accommodation or meals to stranded passengers. It is advisable to take at least some emergency cash with you in case you are stranded somewhere.

The airport's infrastructure has been preserved from the time of the Soviet Union, a one-story box made of metal structures, there is absolutely nothing to do here (to shorten the waiting time).

kitchen

In addition to the foods that are common throughout Russia, the food in Yakutia has its own peculiarities due to the national cuisines of the locals. For example, you should definitely try stroganin, ojogos (beef or horse ribs), dairy dishes, for example күөрчэх (whipped cream, usually served with berries).

  • Stroganina (Russian строганина) consists of raw, frozen fish. Thinly sliced strips of the frozen fish are rolled in a mixture of salt and pepper called makanina. Stroganina is made from different types of fish. It is often enjoyed with vodka, or with other ingredients.

nightlife

security

You should prepare for extreme climates, especially in winter you need suitable clothing to protect yourself against the cold. It is helpful, whenever possible, to use local sources of information to be warned of floods, forest fires, etc. There are forbidden areas that you should avoid as much as possible.

Nature is very pristine and represents a danger for the inexperienced. If you are in the forest, you should watch out for snakes, which usually warm up in the sun on the stones. There aren't many of them, but some could be venomous vipers. The other problem these (and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere) have is ticks. Your bites may be infectious, vaccinations are recommended.

One should never stray further from human settlements without the appropriate equipment and leave the path, destination and intended period of the hike or rafting tour behind with every tour.
