  • background

The Russian Far East is extraordinarily distant from Russia's main population centers in Europe and is usually visited separately, except in connection with the Trans-Siberian Railway. The largest city in the region, Vladivostok, is seven time zones from Moscow, with 9,300 km of railway line between them. The Far East is very different from popular perception of Russia - it is very mountainous and has an often spectacular Pacific coast. The people of this region have more in common with those of northern China or the Inuit than with the Slavic Russians; However, in the larger cities, Slavs predominate.

In the Far East region, the population density is extremely low (the lowest in the country), while the population is very unevenly distributed: the highest density is found in the area of Primorye, in the Jewish Autonomous Territory it is only half the size, and in the area around Khabarovsk it is only a fraction of it. If initially people settled along the transport routes (Trans-Siberia, other railways and highways), then over the past two decades the population has been concentrated in large cities, and a large number of villages and settlements are semi-empty or simply abandoned by residents.

When time and money are not an issue, the city belongs Vladivostok to the highlights of this huge region, as well as the island chain of the beautiful Kuril Islands, the national parks of Kamchatka, cruises along the coast of Chukchi and possibly big game hunting in the wildlife paradise of Yakutia.

    security

You should prepare for extreme climates, especially in winter you need suitable clothing to protect yourself against the cold. It is helpful, whenever possible, to use local sources of information to be warned of floods, forest fires, etc. There are forbidden areas that you should avoid as much as possible.

Nature is very pristine and represents a danger for the inexperienced. If you are in the forest, you should watch out for snakes, which usually warm up in the sun on the stones. There aren't many of them around, but some could be venomous vipers. The other problem these (and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere) have is ticks. Your bites may be infectious, vaccinations are recommended.

One should never stray further from human settlements without the appropriate equipment and leave the path, destination and intended period of the hike or rafting tour behind with every tour.
