Ulan Ude is a city in Buryatia. It lies on both sides of the Selenga River. The smaller Uda flows here from the east. The city center is on the right bank of the Selenga.

At the time of the tsars, the region was a retreat for others who were persecuted Old Believers. The city was called Udinsk until 1934. During the Soviet era it was closed to foreigners until 1980.
Because of the high Buryat population, the city has a certain Asian flair. Buryat temples are called "Datsan." Here one follows an essentially Tibetan form of Buddhism.

The airport is “international” in that there are flights to Ulan Bator and, rarely, to Seoul. Coming from Europe you will change trains in Moscow and possibly Novosibirsk, or take the train from Irkutsk.By train
Ulan Ude lies both on the Trans-Siberian Railway Irkutsk and Valdivostok connects. Here the branches transmongolian railway to Ulan Bator and from Beijing. It takes 7 hours to get to the border crossing at Nauschki (Наушки). The formalities there can take a long time.
In addition to long-distance trains to Beijing, Vladivostok or Moscow, there are also direct trains to rather unusual destinations, such as the train between Chita and Eagle at the Black Sea. Trains from Irkutsk take 9 hours.

From Irkutsk (450 km) you can get to Ulan Ude in 7 hours on the P-258 along the south bank of Lake Baikal.
The A340 runs through the border crossing in Kjachta (Russian: Кяхта, 250 km) as AH3 to the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.
