Kirchheim am Ries is one on the western Ries edge located municipality in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Kirchheim is located on the western edge of the Nördlinger Ries crater. This was formed around 15 million years ago when an asteroid about 1 km in size struck.

getting there

By bus

The nearest train station is in Bopfingen and is served hourly (every two hours on weekends) by regional trains. From there, take the 91, 92, 95 or 96 bus to Kirchheim. The buses run Mon – Fri from approx. 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday mornings; there is no traffic on Sundays. The offer is very limited during the school holidays. Many journeys are on-call buses, i.e. the bus must be ordered by telephone in good time before departure. In the street

The nearest freeway is that A7. Coming from the north, take the Symbol: AS 113 Ellwangen and then drives on the L 1060 and the K 3205 to Kirchheim. Coming from the south you drive from the Symbol: AS 115 Bask/Oberkochen via Elchingen and Bopfingen to Kirchheim.

From direction Munich coming from here you first use the B2 to Donauwörth and further the B25 to Wallerstein. From there you can get there via the St 1060 and the L 1078 to Kirchheim.

Regular events

  • In every odd year, find in the 2 St. George's Church in the district of Dirgenheim die Passion play instead of. In contrast to most other Passion Play venues, a completely rewritten game is performed here every two years, which illuminates the Passion story from different perspectives.
  • The monastery games take place in even years on an open-air stage in the monastery garden.

hike

  • The Celtic way is about 15 km long. The circular route begins at the Kirchheim monastery and leads over the Goldberg, the Osterholz, the Ipf and the Blasienberg back to the starting point. The Celtic way is one of the 17 top hiking trails in the Holiday region Donau-Ries and is accordingly based on the criteria of the German hiking association signposted.
  • The 5 km long circular hiking trail Jagstheim also starts at the Kirchheim monastery. The path leads through a forest past Jagstheim with a pilgrimage chapel. On the way back you pass a Keltenschanze.
  • The Sechtaweg 2 leads in the direction of Itzlingen.

To go biking

  • The bike path From crater to crater connects the two asteroid craters Nördlinger Ries and Steinheimer Becken. The two circuits with a total length of 185 km intersect in Nördlingen.
  • The Big Ries round leads once around the Ries crater. It is 105 km long. There is no uniform marking along the route; you have to switch between several cycle paths along the route.
