background

The community consists of the districts, Birkhausen, Ehringen, Munzingen and Wallerstein.

Wallerstein was first mentioned in a document in 1238, when it was still called Steinheim. The village and the castle passed into the ownership of the House of Oettingen in 1250, which later renamed the place. Under this rule, the place later became the upper bailiff and residence of the principality of Oettingen-Wallerstein. In 1500 Emperor Maximilian I granted the place market rights. In 1806 the place came to Bavaria on the occasion of the Rhine Federation Act.
