Krzyżowa - village in Poland, in Dolnośląskie Voivodeship, in Świdnica district, headquarters rural commune, It lies on the river A saw.
Characteristic
Geographical location: 50 ° 47′58 ″ N 16 ° 32′04 ″ E
In the years 1975-1998 the village administratively belonged to the then Wałbrzych Province.
Krzyżowa was always on the sidelines. Linguists even develop its German name (Kreisau) as a "border village". This location - distant from the center of the Second World War - became a great asset for the group of conspirators. The "Kreisau Circle", as they were called by the Gestapo, had been meeting there since 1940. Aristocrats, diplomats and clergy saw the imminent defeat of Germany, so some planned to kill Adolf Hitler. The conspiracy was revealed and in early 1944 the conspirators were repressed. When the attack on Hitler also failed in the summer of 1944, the informal leader of the conspirators and the owner of the palace, Helmut, James Graf von Moltke, was executed in January 1945. His grave was not found.
The palace of von Moltke, which we admire today, dates from 1720 and has a beautiful, austere, neo-baroque shape. It stood on a hill above the former Pilawa riverbed. Together with the church and farm buildings, it forms the wings surrounding the park. The very house where the conspirators met is standing on the side.
After World War II, when Lower Silesia fell to Poland, the palace shared the fate of many similar buildings. The state-owned farm located in it led the building to ruin. Reconstruction started only in 1990.
In 1989, an exceptional event took place in Krzyżowa - a meeting between the Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki and the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. At that time, a mass of reconciliation between our nations was celebrated, and the sign of peace that the politicians gave each other was a symbolic closure of the tragic Polish-German history.
Today, the palace houses the Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe, which continues this work. You can see the permanent exhibition "Courage and Reconciliation". A fragment of the Berlin Wall stands in front of the palace.
The palace can be visited every day from 8-19. It is adapted to the needs of the disabled, there is a convenient parking lot next to it.
