Löbejün is a district of the city Wettin-Löbejün in the northern Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt on the right bank of the Saale. The administration of the new city of Wettin-Löbejün is also located here. The district is about 15 km north of Halle (Saale).

background

The current district of Löbejün goes back to an Old Sorbian foundation. 961 was Löbejün for the first time as Liubichun mentioned in a document of Otto I. The Sorbian name means about Place of the Luboch. The existing castle was taken over and strengthened by Heinrich I, but burned down in 1566 and was then demolished. Several fires (1544, 1566, 1583, 1671 and 1700) badly affected the city. The city has been part of the Duchy of Magdeburg since 1680.

Löbejün has been part of the city since January 1, 2011 Wettin-Löbejün. The villages of Gottgau and Schlettau were districts of Löbejün before.

In many parts of the city you can see that the Löbejun porphyry (rhyolite) has formed the economic basis since 1518 because it was also built here. The porphyry is mainly used as gravel in road construction.
