Wettin is a district of the city Wettin-Löbejün in the northern Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt on the right bank of the Saale. Around 2,400 people live in this district. The German nobility, the House of Wettin, is named after this part of the village and owned their ancestral castle here.

background

Wettin is about 15 kilometers north of the city Halle (Saale) in the north of the Saalekreis. Almost the entire place is on the right bank of the Saale, only the district of Zaschwitz is on the left bank.

It is the ancestral seat of the House of Wettin, which produced numerous margraves, electors and kings in Bavaria, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia as well as in Poland. The still reigning Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and King Albert II of Belgium come from the Ernestine line of the Wettins.

The city was largely destroyed in the great city fire in 1660. Most of the houses were built after that. Earlier buildings can only be found in Brauhausgasse and Grosse Kirchstrasse.

Since 1680 the city was part of the Duchy of Magdeburg.
