Geographical notes
The hamlet of Serra is located on the flat, on the left bank of the Egola torrent, at the point where the Ensi river becomes its tributary. At the locality of Palagio, north of the center, flows the Rio del Palagio, which originates from Montebicchieri and also enters the Egola.
The hamlet borders to the north with Ponte a Egola, west with Marti, in the municipality of Montopoli in Val d'Arno, south with Bucciano and to the east with Balconyvisi, Moriolo is Armor.
Background
The hamlet of Serra developed from the twentieth century as an agricultural village on the crossroads that leads in the direction of numerous localities such as Armor, San Miniato, Ponte a Egola, Bucciano, Balconyvisi is Palaia. The nucleus of the hamlet consisted of some farms and rural buildings, gathered around a tabernacle with the statue of the Madonna, near the crossroads, and here a cooperative Casa del Popolo was built in 1947 which contributed to increasing the attendance of the locality.
Between the seventies and eighties, thanks to the construction of a residential area and some commercial activities, the hamlet developed to become one of the liveliest in the Samminiatese area. The Pisan historian Giuseppe Caciagli wrote in 1972 that "it is due to this particular topographical position, in the plain, the fact that it is a very populated agricultural center and rich in initiatives also of an industrial nature".
