How to get

On the train

By bus

The area can be reached by taking bus 1 or 2 from Nikkō and Tobu-Nikkō stations, staying on the bus past the temple area. The 20km journey takes approximately 1 hour.

How to get around

Tourist boats travel every hour from 9: 30-15: 30, in winter 10: 30-14: 30) and offer spectacular views.

Buses 1 and 2 also allow you to reach the various parts of the lake.

Kegon Falls

Ryuzu waterfall

Odashirogahara Plateau

What to do

  • 1 Nikkō Yumoto Onsen (日光 湯 本 温泉 ス キ ー 場) (near Yunoko Lake and Yumoto Hot Springs), 81 288-62-2532. Ski and spa resort.
  • 2 Akagane Water Park (銅 親水 公園 Akagane Shinsui Kōen). Adventurous hikers may want to take the bus to Matō City, along National Route 122 in the southwest corner of Nikkō City Territory, for a hike to Akagane Shinsui Kōen, sold as the Grand Canyon of the Japan, ever since pollution killed all the trees and left the valley bare. The infamous Ashio copper mine was located nearby.

  • Kirifuri Falls. Waterfalls, hiking trails and the possibility of skiing in winter.
  • Kinugawa. Unconventional hot springs and theme parks Tōbū World Square and Edo Wonderland.
  • Yumoto (30 minutes on the hills). A hot spring complex perched near Lake Yunoko where the Yudaki waterfall plunges.
  • Those interested in steam locomotives or pottery can enjoy Mashiko on the way back to Tokyo.
