Larche is a former French commune, located in the department of Alpes de Haute Provence, in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in the South-East of France.

Understand

The village of Larche is the highest in the department. Its altitude varies between 1,606 and 3,165 meters.

The former municipality is part of the membership area of ​​the Mercantour national park and signed the charter. Part of the territory is located in the heart of the park: certain activities are prohibited there, such as mountain biking.

Since 1er January 2016, Larche and Meyronnes merged to form the new commune of Val-d'Oronaye.

By car

From the rest of France, the departmental road 900 is the only access road to this village (just like the former neighboring town of Meyronnes). The village is signposted after La Condamine-Châtelard.

Since Paris Where Lyon, take the A6 and A7 motorways to Valence-Sud, then direction Gap and Barcelonnette. Another possible solution: around Lyon, the A43 and A48 motorways, then Grenoble, the national 85 and the departmental after Gap allow you to reach the valley.

Since Marseilles, take the A51 motorway to La Saulce (south of Gap), then part of the national 85 and the departmental 942, 900B and 900 (follow Barcelonnette).

Since Nice and the French Riviera, access to the valley is possible via the passes of Cayolle or Bonette-Restefond; in both cases, follow the direction of Coni (Cuneo) or the Col de Larche. A passage through Italy is also possible, via Tende and the SS 20 and 21. Larche is the first village from Piedmont and the crossing of this cross-border pass.

By bike

It is impossible to climb the Col de Larche by bike from the RD 900 coming from Barcelonnette (road presenting a danger of landslide shortly before Meyronnes in the direction France - Italy). Other solutions are possible, in particular mountain bike routes.

Walk

Long-distance hiking trails 5 and 56 cross the old town of Larche.

Access to the town of Larche can be difficult, especially in winter.
