Lauenstein (Altenberg) is a district of Altenberg in the Ore Mountains and is close to the border to Czech Republic.

Lauenstein is one of the oldest settlements in Eastern Ore Mountains and was probably built around 1200 as a border castle. The first written mention was in 1241.

getting there

By train

The Müglitztalbahn (SB 72) between Heidenau and Altenberg stops in Lauenstein.

By bus

The bus routes 385 and 368 run through Lauenstein, but very few buses run during the Saxon school holidays and on weekends.

In the street

The quickest way to get to Lauenstein by car is via the A17. You leave this at the last German exit Bad Gottleuba. From there you follow the motorway slip road via Liebenau and reach Lauenstein after 10km.

On foot

Lauenstein lies on European long-distance footpath E3which runs in the Eastern Ore Mountains identical to the Eisenach – Budapest International Mountain Hiking Trail.
