European long-distance hiking trail E3 - Europäischer Fernwanderweg E3

Course of the long-distance hiking trail E3

The European hiking trail E3 starts on the Iberian Peninsula. Santiago de Compostela is the best-known waymark in Western Europe, because the E3 initially follows well-known pilgrimage routes. The route in Eastern Europe to the Black Sea.

background

The E3 is made up of various long-distance hiking trails on a national and regional level. In France and Spain is the pilgrimage route of the Camino de Santiago, the GR 65, which goes through the Auvergne runs. The Pyrenees are at the height of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port crossed. This is also a popular start for the pilgrimage route Way of St. James. Another starting point for walking to Compostela is on the E3 in the middle of France, namely the place Vezelay. The E3 continues through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria. The route through Romania and Serbia is not yet fully marked, but has already been determined.

Eisenach-Budapest mountain hiking trail

This hiking trail within the socialist community of states was opened in 1983 and bears the beautiful name International mountain hiking trail of friendship Eisenach-Budapest and has enjoyed some popularity since then. The first known inspection of the entire length of the EB in 1987 was completed in 74 days. After the political turning point in 1989, the course of the European long-distance hiking trail E3 to the east was largely based on the route of the Eisenach-Budapest mountain hiking trail. This is especially true for the section of Rechenberg bee mill in the Eastern Ore Mountains to the Hungarian border Sátoraljaújhely. Only the western EB section from the starting point on the Wartburg at Eisenach to Hřensko is marked with the EB logo throughout. While the E3 runs in a Bohemian and a Saxon variant south and north of the Ore Mountains ridge, the "EB" follows the familiar one Rennsteig, crosses the Thuringian slate mountains, the Saale dams, the Vogtland and passes the Ore Mountains also on its north side in German territory. With an alternative route Fulda the E3 can also be hiked continuously via the EB variant.

preparation

If you stay close to the Camino de Santiago, there is usually enough accommodation available. As for all hikers, a vaccination against TBE recommended.

getting there

Portugal

Spain

From Santiago de Compostela the E3 to Vézelay in France is identical to that Camino Francés, the most famous Way of St. James. The E3 is therefore also marked with the yellow shell on a blue background and sometimes a yellow arrow. In the meantime, large stretches have also been marked with the red and white marking, which is also used in Germany. If you start in Santiago, you always have to go east. The other ways of St. James, coming from Portugal and the south of Spain, could otherwise be confusing. The E3 happens 1 Ponferrada, Leon, Burgos and go to Pamplona to the Pyrenees. France is reached on the Col de Bentarte.

France

The E3 is made up of the following parts:

Jakobsweg or GR 65 - from the Spanish border to la Roche bei Le Puy-en-Velay

  1. Of Col de Bentarte (approx. 6 km from Roncesvalles (Spain) to Moissac[1] (? km)
  2. From Moissac to Figeac [2] (? km)
  3. Van Figeac to Le Puy [3] (? km)

GR 3 - from la Roche at Le Puy-en-Velay to Signal de Mont

  1. From Puy to Apinac [4] (? km)
  2. Of Apinac to Chabreloche[5] (? km)
  3. From Chabreloche to les Chevreaux (at Chatelus)[6] (? km)
  4. from les Chevreaux to Signal de Mont [4] (? km)

GR 13 - from Signal de Mont to Fontainebleau

  1. from Signal de Mont to rAuxerre[7]. The GR 13 runs parallel to the GR 654 for 36 km from St-Moré to Auxerre[8] (? km).
  2. From Auxerre to Fontainebleau [4] (? km)

GR 1 (Sentier d'Île-de-France) - from Fontainebleau to Château de la Reine Blanche

GR 12 (Amsterdam-Paris) - Château de la Reine Blanche (at Chantilly) to Montcornet

  1. From Château de la Reine Blanche (at Chantilly) to Amifontaine[9] (168 km)
  2. From Amifontaine to Son[4] (41 km)
  3. Surroundings Sun (near Rethel) to the Lac des Vieilles Forges in the vicinity of Montcornet; this part runs together with part of the GR 654.[8] (67 km)

The GR 12C

is the connection to the GR 15, also known as GR AE. The GR 12C goes from the aforementioned reservoir through the city 2 Montcornet after Monthermé at the river Meuse.[4]

GR 15 (GR AE) - Ardennes - Eifel

It runs from Monthermé naar in France Sorendal.[10] (200 km). The part of the AE along the Semoy river has been described (with small deviations and in the opposite direction) by Julien van Remoortere.[11]

Belgium (200 km)

GR 15 (GR AE) - Ardennes - Eifel

Runs from Bohan, mostly in the valley of Semois[11] and on the river Rulles naar Martelange (total 200 km).[10]

Luxembourg

GR AE to Clervaux

After that, the E3 is part of the hiking trail E2, better known as the GR 5, to the south Schengen on the border triangle of Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. Old editions of the French topoguide réf. 514[12] describe the Luxembourg part of the E3 between Clervaux and Schengen, but not since 2009.

Germany

The German section of the route begins in the border triangle Luxembourg-Germany-France on the Moselle. From there it goes a short distance Saarland to the Saar and then to Saarburg. It goes through to the Rhine Rhineland-Palatinate and also by the only founded in March 2015 Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. In addition, shortly before crossing the Rhine, the little brother, the European long-distance footpath E8, crossed.

The largest river in the country is also the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. From Chew it then continues through the Taunus and close to it Wiesbaden and Frankfurt past. There's a short rendezvous here with the bigger brother, the European long-distance footpath E1. It goes on over Butzbach and rural area to Fulda.

Behind Fulda there are three variants:

  1. Shortly after Fulda, a route splits into two Eisenach from the actual E3. The begins in Eisenach Eisenach-Budapest mountain hiking trail, the friendship route of the former socialist countries. This path is a variant of the E3. The EB path initially follows this Rennsteig, then makes a big loop at the Thuringian Saale dams and leads through Vogtland, Ore Mountains and Elbe Sandstone Mountainsto Germany Hřensko at the Elbe to leave. As far as the route E3 coincides there with the hiking trail Eisenach-Budapest, it is described there.

As before 1989, the main route of the E3 runs south of the Thuringian border Bad Alexandersbad at Wunsiedelwhere it then divides:

  1. The Saxon variant runs through Same, the Vogtland and the Ore Mountainsto join Rechenberg bee mill then to unite with the EB way. This part of the E3 can be found on compass cards 805, 806 and 807.
  1. The Bohemian variant runs from the German-Czech border over the Czech cities Cheb, Loket, Carlsbad and Děčín to Hřensko. The route is shown on Kompass maps for 2018, 2014 and 2012.

Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia

  • From Hřensko at Děčín the E3 largely follows this Eisenach-Budapest hiking trail, who is on the northern border of Czech Republic and the Slovakia runs (i.e. the southern border of Poland). Then further to the east the path reaches the Carpathians and goes through the eastern parts of Slovakia and Hungary.

Hungary

  • The E3 leaves the Eisenach-Budapest mountain hiking trail and runs along the Hungarian hiking trail Alföldi Kéktúra south to Artánd on the Romanian border.

Romania

  • It has always been the plan to get the E3 through Romania with the Bulgarian hiking trail Kom-Emine connect to. The section is to lead over 683 kilometers from Gura Văii via the Munții Banatului and the Munții Apuseni to Oradea and is currently being marked.[13]

Serbia

  • Since the mountain Kom, the beginning of the E3 in Bulgaria, lies on the border to Serbia, it was obvious to lead the E3 through Serbia. On paper there is a route from the Romanian border at the Iron Gate to the Bulgarian border.[14][15]

Bulgaria (650 km)

The Bulgarian mountain hiking trail Kom-Emine (short KE-Weg, Bulgarian Ком - Емине) is 650 km long and thus the longest marked hiking trail in Bulgaria. Part of the trail runs on the crest of the Balkan Mountains. The E3 ends at Cape Emine on the Black Sea for the time being.
