The community Le tampon lies in the southwest and in the interior of the island Reunion.
background
The most likely interpretation of the name "Le Tampon" is the derivation from the Madegasian "Tampona", which means "beautiful view". The place was founded in 1725 and has always been the preferred place of residence of the privileged white upper class because of the healthy mountain air. Until it became independent in 1925, the region was co-administered from Saint-Pierre.
The fourth largest municipality on the island consists of the central town with around 40,000 inhabitants and a further number of scattered settlement-like districts, including the hamlet Bourg Murat with the volcano museum and the volcano observatory of the Piton de la Fournaise and starting point of the Vulkanstrasse.
La Plaine des Cafres

The place has been since 1920 La Plaine des Cafres, eponymous for the central plateau between the extinct volcano to the northwest of the village Piton des Neiges and the active volcano Piton de la Fournaise, also a district of Le Tampon.
The name "La Plaine des Cafres" is derived from the Kaffirs who had fled here as slaves from Africa. After the abolition of slavery they migrated back to the warmer coast and were replaced by the "petit blancs", the whites of the lower class.
The plateau has fertile soils and a cool, humid climate, the green region is more reminiscent of alpine alpine landscapes than the tropics. With numerous cattle, the region is also the center of milk, cheese and butter production on the island. Geraniums were introduced by the researcher Joli Bois Pottier around 1884, and since then the distillation of geranium perfume has been another important branch of the economy, but it is now in decline. Another important branch of the economy is tourism.
