Saint-Pierre is the third largest city on Réunion and is located on the south coast. It is the largest town in the south of the island.

background

The city was founded in 1735. It is named after Pierre Benoît Dumas (1668–1745), governor-general for Réunion, the Île Bourbon at that time, among other things.

From the beginning of the eighteenth century onwards, Saint Pierre with its large hinterland on the climatically favored south coast quickly developed into the agricultural center of the island, initially as a transshipment point for the then important coffee production. Sugar factories, distilleries and plants for starch production are then built around the sugar cane grown from 1815.

the new marina

In 1882 the port of Saint-Pierre was opened after thirty years of construction. At the time, the city was the largest in terms of inhabitants and also the strongest economically on the island. The opening and development of the island's new overseas port in Le Port from 1884 and the beginning of the Second World War lead to economic stagnation, from which the city has only recovered in modern times.

In November 2001, after 10 years of general renovation, the port will be reopened.

With three large industrial and commercial areas, Saint Pierre is once again an important industrial location on the island.

Saint-Pierre is a leading member of the Association of Cities founded on June 24, 1997 CIVIS on Réunion, an association for the joint performance and development of communal tasks such as urban planning and housing construction with urban development and the promotion of tourism.

The inhabitants of Saint-Pierre call themselves in French Saint-Pierrois or Saint-Pierroises, in German Saint-Pierresen.
