Lignano is a seaside resort on the Italian Adriatic coast in the province of Udine in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. It extends over the northeast half of the Tagliamento-Deltas between the Marano lagoon and the open Adriatic Sea. The place is divided into three parts: Sabbiadoro (in the northeast), Pineta and Riviera (at the mouth of the Tagliamento).

background

The name Lignano for the area of the current city (which was given to the Republic in 1420 Venice fell) is documented from the 15th century and possibly indicates an owner named Linunus. In the course of history, the Venetian Doges enfeoffed various noble families with the land. One of them, the Vendramin family in Latisana had the St. Zacharias Church built in the then hamlet of Pineda (in what is now the Pineta district) in the 16th century. It mainly served the fishermen, because Pineda itself was too small for a church (in 1466 it consisted of only two houses). There was later a control station for the port of Lignano, which in 1813 had 70 inhabitants.

Nevertheless, today Lignano is a very young city. Before its development, the peninsula consisted of swamp and tree land and was only inhabited by a few farming families all year round. In addition there were the seasonal stays of the fishermen from Marano, who temporarily stayed in reed-clad wooden huts (casoni) lived.

The oldest part is Sabbiadoro (in German: golden sand), which already existed at the end of the 19th century by Marano was used as a bathing beach by boat. 1903-1904 a wooden bathing establishment was built and used mainly by Sunday day trippers.

The first hotel (the Marinwhich belonged to the Mayor of Marano) was built in 1905 (it was still in use in 2005), followed by the hotels Friuli and Vittoria. Nevertheless, the further development of Lignano was questionable at the time because of the swamp-related malaria and suffered another setback as a result of the First World War.

In 1924 the first lake terrace (on the site of today's Terrazza al mare, a project by the architect Provino Valle), with which the stagnating development of Lignano picked up again. Another important point was the better land connection through a new road from Latisana to Lignano with a rotating bridge over an intermediate canal, as well as the eradication of malaria by draining the marshland. In the 1930s a children's home and a church were built. At that time Lignano counted around 60,000 mostly Italian summer visitors.

In the 1950s, Lignano Pineta (named after the pine forest there) was founded southwest of Sabbiadoro. There, Marcello D'Olivio realized a very unusual urban development plan: a street that leads outwards in a spiral starting from the center of Pineta. The individual turns of this spiral are 100 meters apart.

The mass tourism caused by the economic boom then increased the number of holiday guests from 1.8 million (early 1960s) to over 6 million (1975). This record has not been reached since then.

Restaurants

There are many restaurants in Lignano. Typical dishes are pizza, pasta and fish. Renowned restaurants are:

  • Al Parco, Sabbiadoro. Known for pizzas.
  • Nerone, Pineta. Known for pizza and pasta.
  • Ristorante Al Cason, on the Tagliamento. Reservation needed.
  • Croce del Sud, known for pizza, pasta, and seafood. Very large restaurant, but thanks to the quick service it goes in no time and tastes delicious. As a conclusion, each guest receives a small glass of zabaglione for free.
  • Atmosphera A new restaurant since 2019 that has a menu that really leaves nothing to be desired. Pizza, pasta, meat dishes, seafood and all of that in unusual versions - gluten-free, lactose-free and, alternatively, pizzas made from Kamut. Overall, they try very hard to implement every special request of a guest in their dishes.

ice

There are many ice cream parlors in Lignano. The price per ball is around € 1.15. An insider tip is the Bar Milano in Via Carinzia. The vacationers praise the large, homemade balls. The price of a ball there is € 1 [1].

My insider tip ice cream parlor is Capitan Morgan on the corner of Viale Centrale Nr 16 and Via Lilla with a huge selection of different types of ice cream, including lactose-free flavors! and a beautiful large outdoor area to sit comfortably and enjoy. In 2020, the price of an ice cream ball will now be around € 1.50.
