Toponymy

the medieval latin of the scribes and tabellions kept various spellings of this modest pagus merovingian including Lomensis pagus, Lummensis pagus, Lumacensis pagus, Lamacensis pagus, Loffensis pagus, even in pago Lotmensi to simply become Lomensis, Lummensis, Lucumaconsis or Loensis. In Bas francique, we find Loon Where Loën while we find Loos, Lootz Where The bone in Walloon old. All these terms come from Proto-Germanic Lahun meaning "Wooded hill" and relate to the old county. For the locality itself we find in Bas francique Limbourgeois Borcleon, Borchloen Where Borchloën, in Walloon Borcklain and in old french Bourg Los all meaning "Castle on the wooded hill".

Built in 1680, as indicated by anchors of the main facade, it replaces an older building dating from XIe century which was the first residence of Earls of Looz, hence its alternative name of Grevenhuis and presents all the elements of the style Mosan Renaissance. On the north facade, we can see twelve cartridges representing, at the top left the shield of the Principality of Liège and on the right that of Holy Roman Empire, below those of the ten Good Cities lossainnes of the old principality, from left to right: Looz, Beringen, Bilzen, Brée, Hamont, Hasselt, Herk-de-Stad, Maaseik, Peer and Stokkem. On the gable, a sculpture of the Virgin and Child placed after the plague epidemic of 1676 which caused the death of 167 Lossains. Inside, besides thevisitor Center, we can see a small museum where the charters of privileges of the city and the guilds in XIIe century as well as a torture table used during witchcraft trials.
