Toponymy
the medieval latin of the scribes and tabellions kept various spellings of this modest pagus merovingian including Lomensis pagus, Lummensis pagus, Lumacensis pagus, Lamacensis pagus, Loffensis pagus, even in pago Lotmensi to simply become Lomensis, Lummensis, Lucumaconsis or Loensis. In Bas francique, we find Loon Where Loën while we find Loos, Lootz Where The bone in Walloon old. All these terms come from Proto-Germanic Lahun meaning "Wooded hill" and relate to the old county. For the locality itself we find in Bas francique Limbourgeois Borcleon, Borchloen Where Borchloën, in Walloon Borcklain and in old french Bourg Los all meaning "Castle on the wooded hill".
