Loretto is a place of pilgrimage in Northern Burgenland. At the northern foot of the Leithagebirge is the baroque basilica Maria Loretto as well as several other baroque and sacred buildings.

background

Loretto is one of the largest prehistoric sites in Austria. Since 1950, a fossil antelope and a rhinoceros from the Miocene, a burial site with over 160 graves (Bronze Age to Urnfield Culture), 200 Illyrian graves from the Hallstatt period, Scythian graves from the 5th century and references to Celtic burials have been found.

Loretto was an important place of pilgrimage as early as the Middle Ages. From around 1650 the Loretto chapels were created as a copy of the Italian town near Ancona. For the Turkish siege in 1683 the place was devastated and then rebuilt in the Baroque era.

Loretto lime is mined in numerous quarries around Loretto. The stones with point-like, dark sprinkles in a light-colored overall tone are very popular as building material in the region.
