the port of Luiz Alves is a district of São Miguel do Araguaia, 40 km from it, which nowadays is famous as the location of the global soap opera "Araguaia". The origin of today's Luiz Alves do Araguaia settlement is somewhat nebulous and dates back to the end of the 19th century. The name would be due to a merchant, who with his boat went up the Araguaia, from the For, making a stop, among many others, at the exit of the lake that today also bears his name. The place was known as Porto do Luiz Alves, later just Porto Luiz Alves, and today Luiz Alves do Araguaia.

Luiz Alves is reached from São Miguel do Araguaia, which in turn is connected by asphalt both to Brasilia (BR-153 to Uruaçu and BR-080, 530 km) as to Arowana and Goiás (GO-164, parallel to Araguaia), where the Goiania (513 km).

The port of Luiz Alves is considered a paradise for fishermen, for its proximity to the excellent fishing spots along the Bananal island, access to pond, at the river bar Crixás-açu and the region of Crystalline, attractions to which it is relatively close. - In order to camp on the riverbank, the environmental agencies demand that the campers comply with the rules of coexistence with the Araguaia River. Some of them: do not use native wood from the region, do not hunt, do not fish without a license from Organs environmental agencies, do not set fires, build the bathroom away from the river bank for at least 30 meters and do not use cans inside, and take all the garbage produced at the camp back to the cities.
