About

Short history

The church was erected in 1724, during the reign of Nicolae Mavrocordat (ruler of Wallachia, 1719-1730), by Archimandrite Ioanichie Stratonikeas. In the courtyard of his inn, Ioanichie built the church and a monastery, economically supported by the income from the inn (a situation frequently encountered at the time). In 1726 the abbot Ioanichie was elected metropolitan of Stavropolis and exarch of Caria. The monastery he built has since been named Stavropoleos, after the old seat. On February 7, 1742, Ioanichie, aged 61, died and was buried in his church.

The inn and the annexes of the monastery were demolished at the end of the 19th century. Over time, the church was affected by earthquakes, which weakened the tower until it fell. However, the tower's paintings were restored at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, only the church remains of the old monastery, next to which there is a building from the early twentieth century, which houses a library, a conference room and a collection of old icons (early eighteenth century ) and objects of worship, as well as fragments of frescoes recovered from churches demolished during the communist regime. The new building was built according to the plans of the architect Ion Mincu.

Since 1991, the church has been pastored by Father Iustin Marchiș, the first hieromonk of the church in the last hundred years. The community living here, along with the daily services, deals with the restoration of old books, icons and priestly clothes. The church choir sings non-Byzantine music (a single voice supported by a prolonged sound called ison - accompaniment), now rarely found in churches in Romania.

Work to build an electricity transformation point, which began in October 1998, led to the discovery of substructures in the middle of Stavropoleos Street, near the church. Archaeological excavations that began at that time led to the release of fragmentary sections of walls probably belonging to several stages of building the Stavropoleos inn.

On March 26, 2008, the Stavropoleos Monastery was re-established as a nunnery dedicated to St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel and St. Justin the Martyr and the Philosopher. The mowing of the first four monks took place on May 28, 2008. On June 4, 2012, the church of the Stavropoleos Monastery was reconsecrated by Fr. Father Patriarch Daniel.

Accommodation

The monastery does not offer accommodation, but due to its very central location, most of the central hotels in Bucharest are within walking distance of this place:

  • Intercontinental Hotel Bucharest. The hotel is located in the heart of the city, in University Square, near the National Theater and km 0 of the capital, thus offering easy access to many points of economic, commercial, business and, of course, tourist interest.
  • Hotel Capsa. The hotel unfolds a long story, a story of Bucharest before, between and after the war, a story with distinguished characters, from high society, with social events, with dancing evenings, with historical moments, all exposed in a magical setting, in which elegance and bonton are watchwords.
  • Hotel Rembrandt. Hotel Rembrandt Bucharest is a 3 star hotel, located in the old center of the capital (Lipscani area). The building dates from 1925 and was completely renovated.
