The Saint Petersburg metropolitan area is in the midst of Leningrad Oblast. The historical city lies in its center St. Petersburg, she was in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great at the mouth of the river Neva founded in the Newabove. Today's metropolis has developed along the coast towards the Gulf of Finland. It currently consists of 18 districts, which can be divided into a total of 111 sub-districts. 9 of these districts are cities, 21 are settlements and 81 are municipal districts. Tourist Attractions
The "Venice of the North" with its numerous canals and more than 400 bridges is the result of a huge urban project that began in 1703 under Peter the Great. The city was named after the October Revolution Leningrad. Its architectural heritage combines the very different baroque and purely neoclassical styles as seen in the Admiralty, the Winter Palace, the Marble Palace and the Hermitage.

First and foremost is the historic city center with 2,300 palaces, castles and other magnificent buildings. It was named in 1991 Historic Center of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments as UNESCO world cultural heritage registered. The world heritage sites in the city center are in the article St. Petersburg listed.
- 1 Kronstadt (Кронштадт). The Kronstadt fortress is located on the Baltic Sea island of Kotlin. It was founded in 1703. The historic old town is surrounded by numerous forts and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- 2 Gatchina Castle (Большой Гатчинский дворец). In addition to the historical center, the palace and the park are part of the world heritage.
- 5 Catherine Palace (Большой Екатерининский дворец). The palace is located in the city of Pushkin, formerly Tsarskoye Selo, Tsar village. It was built in 1748–1756 in the Baroque style.
- 6 Lomonosov (Oranienbaum). The ensemble of palaces, pavilions, a palace park and the historic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- 7 Pavlovsk (Павловск). Summer residence of the Russian tsars, built 1780-1786 in the classical style.

- 8 Repino - (Russian Репино) - The place was originally called Kuokkala and was made in 1948 in honor of the painter Repin renamed. His former home now serves as a museum.
- 9 Cemetery in Komarovo The place Komaro (Finnish: Kellomäki) - was before the October Revolution a popular residential and health resort for wealthy citizens from Saint Petersburg. The cemetery is well worth a visit.
