Meuselwitz is a city in Altenburger Land in Thuringia, about 12 kilometers northeast of Altenburg and 11 kilometers east of Time. It lies in the country triangle Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

background

Meuselwitz was first used in 1139 as Muzelbuze manor mentioned in a document. The manor changed hands several times until 1676 Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff (1626-1692) was acquired. From 1664 he served as Privy Councilor, Chancellor and Consistorial President in the service of Duke Moritz von Sachsen-Zeitz. Seckendorf had a new castle built here in 1677, which was fundamentally redesigned between 1724 and 1727. After the bombing in 1945 and demolitions during the Soviet Zone, only the orangery remains of the palace complex.

In the 17th century, lignite was found in the area around the village. However, the deposits have only been developed since 1860. Initially, the coal was mined underground, later in large-scale open-cast mines.

The town hall was built in 1861/1862. On July 6, 1874, Meuselwitz received from the Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Altenburg the city law. In the same year it was connected to the line by rail AltenburgTime.

During the Second World War, several forced labor camps existed here as branches of the Buchenwald concentration camp. In air raids in 1944 and 1945, 85% of all buildings, including the castle, were damaged or destroyed. Over 250 people died.

The most important company today is the Meuselwitz Guss iron foundry.

After several incorporations, Meuselwitz now includes Brossen, Bünauroda, Falkenhain, Mumsdorf, Neubraunshain, Neupoderschau, Schnauderhainichen, Waltersdorf, Wintersdorf and Zipsendorf.
