Miyajima is an island in the prefecture Hiroshima.
background
The name Miyajima means Shrine Island. You can get to her from Miyajima-guchi with ferries that go several times an hour during the day. The island has an area of approx. 30 km², it is protected between the largest Japanese main island Honshu and the smaller Shikoku in the Seto Inland Sea. The island is also known by that name Itsukushima.
On the island is the place of the same name Miyajima, It belongs to the city Hatsukaichi, a neighboring city of Hiroshima. Miyajima itself only has around 2000 residents. The entire island is considered sacred. Even today, no dead are buried on it, and women were not allowed to live on it until the beginning of the 20th century.
getting there
- Trains run from Hiroshima Station (JR Hiroshima station) to the 1 Miyajima-guchi station (JR-Miyajima-guchi station), duration approx. 30 minutes, then the ferry to 2 Pier on the island (about every half hour), duration 10 minutes.
- There are boat connections from Hiroshima Port (around 30 minutes) and from Motoyasu Bridge (just under an hour).
