The region Hakone around the place of the same name is a popular recreation area in the Japanese prefecture among Tokyoites Kanagawa at the 1 Ashi lake(芦 ノ 湖).

Hakone is located on Lake Ashi in Fuji Hakone Izu National Park. It is only about eighty kilometers to Tokyo and Yokohama, which is why the place is used as a local recreation area and is accordingly frequented. On the lake, ferries designed as pirate ships or Mississippi paddle steamers travel from Hakonemachi via Motohakone to Togendai and back. Although these look nice and are popular among the Japanese, the expensive excursions are at best worth the money when the sun is shining.

From the north shore of Lake Ashi you can see the in clear weather Mount Fuji, but in summer it often hides in the hazy air.

The ran through Hakone Tōkaidō, the former highway from Tokyo to Kyoto. In Hakone there was a control station that Seki-sho. The area to the east of it, i.e. the area around Tokyo, was therefore given the name Kantō, so east of the lock. To the west of it lie Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka, this area was thus called Kansai, west of the lock designated.

The area has always been popular with Tokyo's as a summer getaway. After the terrorist attacks by American airmen on the capital, many non-hostile foreigners were evacuated here in 1944 and mostly stayed until they were deported in 1947.

getting there

It should be noted that the region is in high season very can be crowded. Peak times are all summer weekends, Golden Week (in May), New Years and the first three weeks of August. Nevertheless, the small towns die out after business hours, which are generally complete between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. It can then be difficult to get something to eat outside of hotels.

By train

From Tokyo

From the main station Tokyo from you take the train to Odawara, possibly with the JR Tokaido Shinkansen. Here you switch to the Hakone Tozan Line, a private narrow-gauge railway that runs up 1 Hakone-Yumoto moves.

tip
If you want to get to the region as cheaply as possible, take the regular Odakyu train to Odawara (¥ 890) and buy the 3-day pass there.
The combined one can also make sense Hakone Kamakura Pass (3 days, 2018: ¥ 6500), which includes travel from Shinjuku.

It is cheaper to travel by private car Odakyu-Line off Tokyo Shinjuku (approx. 1½ hours; Japan Rail Pass does not apply). There are also 3-day passes (2018: ¥ 4500; with the Mt. Fuji area ¥ 8000) that cover the cable car and buses. The fast one Romance Car until Hakone remains subject to a surcharge.

Out Kansai

Coming from the south, JR Tōkai offers a 3 day valid Mt. Fuji Tourist Ticket, which costs ¥ 11300-23800 in 2018, depending on the place of departure, and includes round-trip travel on the Shinkansen.

You can continue to Hakone by bus, either from Mishima to Hakone-machi (50 min.) or in an hour from Atami to Moto-Hakone.

By bus

The Chuō Highway-Buses of the Keio Dentetsu, from Shinjuku bus station (new south exit of the station) or Shibuya (on the 5th floor of the station of the Keio Inokashira) to in front of the train station 2 Kawaguchiko (河口湖 駅, 2018 ¥ 1750).

Long-distance buses go to the district of Sengoku-hara or to Togendai at the northern tip of the lake.

With a change in Gotemba you get to / from Fuji.

The trains of the Hakone-Tozan-Bahn overcome gradients of up to 80 ‰.

The Hakonetozan-Brain line from Odawara is the main squad. The route itself, with three changes of direction, is an experience in itself. It takes forty minutes from start to finish.

The Hakone Tozan Cable Car-The route is not a cable car with free-hanging cabins. The trains are brought here on tracks by a pull rope running in the middle over gradients of up to 200 ‰. From Gora, at 553 meters above sea level, it is 1.2 kilometers to 13 Sounzan(早 雲山 駅). The last ascent is shortly after 7 p.m. and the descent after 10 p.m.

This is where the actual cable car, the Ropeway, at. With this it goes over 2.5 km and 300 meters in altitude 14 Ōwakudani(大 涌 谷). This Gifel can be reached from the other side 15 Tōgendai(桃源 台) at the lake.

Another cable car leads from 16 Hakone-en(箱根 園 駅)17 Komagatake(駒 ヶ 岳 頂上 駅).

Bus lines H and K run between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-Yumoto in around 35 minutes, R is an express. The company's buses Izu-Hakone are not included in the pass offers. You can recognize their lines by the fact that on the front of the bus at the line display, the code letter is enclosed in a circle, while the Odakyu-Line letters a square is located.

The west side of the lake is too mountainous for building. However, the toll road leads along the flank Ashiako skyline-Road.

  • 1  Hakone Total Tourist Information, 706-35 Yumoto, Hakone-machi (At the station forecourt). Tel.: 81 460-85-5700. Since May 2018 there is a machine where you can get 12 different foreign currencies exchanged for yen. Like all devices of this type, it switches off in the evening.
Iriūda
2  naturehistorical Museum (神奈川 県 立 生命 の 星 ・ 地球 博物館), 499 Iryūda. Certainly with a scientific claim in a relatively new building. At least a good way to spend 2-3 hours in bad weather.Open: 9 a.m. - 4.30 p.m., closed on Mondays and every 2nd Tuesday of the month.Price: ¥ 520.
3  Ruins of the castle at Ishigakiyama (石 垣 山 一夜 城 跡), 1383-12 Hayakawa, Odawara-shi. Under protection as a memorial of national importance. Little more has been preserved than the foundations, and there is also a small exhibition.
Ōwakudani

The “boiling valley” on the mountain top can be reached by cable car, but there are also buses directly from Hakone-en or Odawara. In 2015-6 the valley was closed due to a high proportion of poison gas after a volcanic eruption, which can happen again at any time. In the summer of 2018, all of the valley's vegetation was destroyed, the designated hiking trails into the valley are still closed, only the area around the cable car station (with restaurants and shops) is accessible. A small geology museum has been opened (¥ 100), which clearly explains the processes and backgrounds.

Ōwakudani was formed about 3000 years ago when the Hakone volcano erupted. Sulfur vapors rise from numerous crevices on its flanks, and there are numerous hot springs, some of which can be used to boil eggs. The right contact person for this is the tea house to be hiked on the mountain 1 Kurotamago Chaya (9.00 a.m.-4.00 p.m.; lunch buffet ¥ 1800). There you can get black eggs for a few hundred yen, the color of which came about when they were cooked due to the minerals in the water.

Hakone, Moto-hakone and Hakone-en

Moto-hakone and Hakone-en are located on the south and southwestern shores of the lake.

A little out of the way by Lake Shojin but definitely worth seeing are around 25 carved out of the rocks 7 Buddha statues from the Kamakura period (Bus stop: Soga-kyodai-no haka).

At the main street in the Mitsuya district there is the on the side facing away from the lake Old Tōkaidō Cedar Avenue a piece of steep hiking trail on the former main road through a forest. An old milestone has also been preserved and explained. The designated route to Hakone-Yunoto takes about 3½ hours.

  • 10  Tamamura Toyoo Life Art Museum (玉 村 豊 男 ラ イ フ ア ー ト ミ ュ ー ジ ア ム), 61 Motohakone, (Right behind the boat docks). Small exhibition of contemporary art.Open: 10.30 a.m. - 5 p.m.Price: Free.
  • Narukawa Art Museum (成 川 美術館), 570 Motohakone. The core of the collection are Nihonga, plus the permanent exhibition of Chinese art. From the panorama lounge you have a wonderful view over the lake to Fuji when the weather is nice.Open: daily 9 am-5pm.Price: ¥ 1300.
  • The 11 Hakone Detached Palace (Summer Palace) stood in 16 acres of beautiful Onshihakone-Park above the boat dock in Hakone-machi. The summer palace of the imperial family collapsed in the 1923 earthquake. Today's architectural monstrosity made of western style elements from the late 19th century, plus Doric columns on the gray facade, emerged in the 1990s. The park is open to the public. From here you have a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. With a bit of luck and a clear view, you can discover Mount Fuji from here.
  • 12  Hakone Control Station Museum (箱根 関 所 資, Hakone sekisho), 1 Hakone. Tel.: 81 460-83-6635. A small museum is attached. The buildings are made of wood from the Tokugawa era. The original facility was no longer used from 1865 and fell into disrepair. The current museum was built in 1999 based on old plans.Open: daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.Price: ¥ 500.
  • 13  Sekisho Karakuri Museum (関 所 か ら く り 美術館), 17 Hakone. Primarily sales exhibition for inlay work.Open: 9 am-5pm.Price: ¥ 300.
Gora
  • 14  Open air museum (彫刻 の 森 美術館, Hakone Open Air Museum), 1121 Ninotaira (2 minutes from Chokoku-no-mori train station 彫刻 の 森). Tel.: 81-0460-82-1161. About 120 modern sculptures in the park. 300 exhibits by this artist in the Picasso Pavilion. With a foot bath fed by a hot spring at the cafe.Open: 9 am-5pm.Price: ¥ 1600.
  • 15  Photo museum (写真 美術館), 強 羅 1300-432 (150 m from Gora train station, in the direction of the cable car). Open: Wed.-Mon. 10.00-17.00.
  • the 16 Meissen Garden Museum was created from a private collection of Meissen porcelain (2018: a hefty ¥ 1600).
  • The foundation of the Pola Museum, which opened in 2002 (ポ ー ラ 美術館, Pola Bijutsukan) formed the private art collection of the boss of a cosmetics company.
  • 17  Hakone Gora Park (箱根 強 羅 公園) (Koen-kami station 公園 上 駅). In the landscaped park there is a small botanical garden with greenhouses, a pottery museum and a tea house with a garden (until 4 p.m.) in the style of the tea ceremony Matcha is served with sweets.Open: 9 am-5pm.Price: For owners of the Hakone Free Pass free. Sengokuhara
  • Mononofu-no-Sato Art Museum (箱根 武士 の 里 美術館). Artistically valuable items from ancient Japan, such as samurai armor and swords. Small but nice.Open: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (shorter winter and day off Wed-Thu).Price: ¥ 1500.
Kowakudani
  • 19  Okada Art Museum (岡田 美術館), 493-1 Kowakudani (Kowakidani train station, possibly a 2-minute bus ride. This line comes directly from Hakone-Yumoto). East Asian art, some very exquisite pieces. Here, too, you can dangle your feet in hot water in the in-house café.Open: 9 am-5pm.Price: ¥ 2800.

Sections of the old main street Tokaidō, which was essentially a footpath, as wagons were hardly used in ancient Japan, have been preserved and are signposted accordingly.

On the first weekend in November, the Daimyō Gyōretsu a samurai parade in costume re-enacted. It starts at 9.45 am at the primary school in Hakone-Yumoto, and ends at the Fujiya Hotel at around 2 pm.

In the climbing garden of the 20 Forest Adventure, フ ォ レ ス ト ア ド ベ ン チ ャ ー, you can swing yourself securely from tree to tree.

Hiking trails are marked on Mount Hakone.

Don't miss out on one of the many Onsen to use. There are public ones, but some are connected to hotels or ryokans. Prices vary with the equipment, private pools or wellness can often be booked. Simple baths cost ¥ 1200-1400 (with a time limit). Usual opening times are 10.00-21.00, with a day off during the week.

When using it, it is essential to observe the Japanese bathing etiquette: In the bathroom, you undress and wash yourself thoroughly in the shower. Only when you are completely clean and free of soap do you step into the bath water.

Gōra
Yunessun (小 涌 園 ユ ネ ッ サ ン), 1297 Ninotaira. An onsen adventure pool aimed primarily at families with children. Associated with two hotels, whose guests have free entry.Open: 9 am-8pm.Price: Adventure pool ¥ 2900, onsen only ¥ 1900. Various combination tickets including meals: ¥ 3500-5000.
Miyanoshita
21  Miyanoshita Onsen (宮 ノ 下 温泉) (300 m up from the station of the same name). Attached to the Fujiya Hotel. This was one of the first to be built in the western style in 1878. A hiking trail up the Sengen-yama begins directly below (beginning at the shrine).
2  Naraya Cafe (Right at the train stop). The menu doesn't offer anything exciting: Japanese sweets and what the Japanese think of as hot dogs or pizza. Interesting because you can hang your feet in hot spring water on the terrace while sipping your espresso.Open: Thursday-Tuesday 10.30am-6pm.
Hakone-yumoto
22  Tensan Onsen (天山 湯 治 郷), 208 Yumotochaya (Shuttle bus B from the bridge at the train station). With rotemburo and cave bath. Gets very busy on weekends.Open: 9 am-10pm.Price: from ¥ 1300.
23  Yuasobisho onsen (箱根 の 湯), 100-1 Yumotochaya (1 km walk or bus B from Hakone-yumoto Ri. Sōndori). Four different pools. Towel and yukata rent ¥ 350. With an attached snack bar at reasonable prices.Open: 10.00-22.00.Price: ¥ 1050 (no time limit).

A popular souvenir are eggs hard-boiled in sulphurous water on the mountain kuro tamago.

Practically all shops, the few Convini except, close at 6:00 p.m. at the latest, in the villages already 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In terms of handicrafts, inlaid work is carried out on nested wooden boxes that can be opened (寄 木 細 工, yosegi saiku) with sales exhibitions in the Hatajuku Parquet Hall (on the road from Hakone-yumoto towards the lake) and im Homma Yoseki Museum (Iriuda). One often finds "glass art," e.g. in Glass Art Experience Workshop at Hakone-yumoto station or the Venetian Glass Museum(ヴ ェ ネ チ ア ン ・ グ ラ ス 美術館) where to pseudo-Murano also sold. Nice, but for an imitation the rooms designed in the style of the Doge's Palace are overpriced at ¥ 1500 entry.

The place Hakone is full of souvenir shops that meet the needs of the Japanese Omiyage fully satisfy, but hardly differ from others in the country. Yosegi It's everywhere.

Brand-conscious Japanese visit the mall 1 Gotemba Premium Outlets (1312 Fukasawa, 御 殿 場 プ レ ミ ア ム ・ ア ウ ト レ ッ ト) accessible by bus from Gōra.

The Princehotel-Group maintains hotels and ryokans in Hakone, all of the upscale category. For example that Fuyo-Tei, a lovely little house in the mountains with 2 hot thermal pools. Hospitality, accommodation and food are traditionally Japanese and good, unfortunately the website is only Japanese. The hotel group also has houses with English language website.

There is a risk of burns from the gases and vapors emitted by the fumaroles. As everywhere in Japan, however, the really dangerous areas are marked or cordoned off.

If you can take about a week to ten days, a visit to the Hakone region, coming from Tokyo with tours of Yokohama, Kamakura, the Izu Peninsula and in summer, provided you have the right equipment, an ascent of the Fuji to combine.

Odawara

The keep of Odawara Castle is a new reinforced concrete building from the 1960s.

The only bigger city is 1 Odawara, mostly transfer station, either to Hakone or to the Izu Peninsula. It should at least be visited because of his castle.

25  Odawara Castle (小田原 城). The original system dates from the 15th century. The Ōkubo daimyōs residing here were among the most important princes of the Tokugawa period. Since 1870 the castle fell into disrepair and the tower was demolished in 1893. The 1923 earthquake then brought the wall down. From 1960, 1971 and 1997-2009 extensive restoration work took place, so that it is now again a classic representation of a Sengoku-era complex. 26  Tsujimura Botanical Garden (辻 村 植物 公園). Not scientifically signposted, but worth a visit in the cherry blossom season. At one end is a Forest Adventure named climbing garden in the forest, which particularly appeals to young people.
