background
Yokohama was a small fishing village before the 1860s. It was completely destroyed in the great earthquake in 1923 and again by American bombings in World War II in 1943-45. Insofar as “historical” buildings exist, these are replicas.
The south of Tokyo located and with her about Kawasaki The metropolis that has grown together is often neglected because of the capital, although it has a lot to offer in terms of tourism. The rise of Yokohama began with the landing of the "black ships" in 1854, i.e. American gunboat diplomacy. The previously insignificant fishing village quickly became one of the most important port cities in Japan. The main attraction for Japanese is the Chinatown.
Administratively, the city is divided into 18 districts ... ku (区). Interesting tourism can be found mainly in Naka-ku ("middle," 中 区), Nishi-ku ("west," 西区), Minami-ku ("south," 南 区) and m. E Kanagawa-ku (神奈川 区). For visiting the center, the stations Kannai, Basamichi and especially Sakuragichō are important.
You can get an insight into the dark side of Japan, with its inadequate social security, in the Kotobuki-chō district at Ishikawachō train station. This is the traditional “residential area” of the homeless, vegetating as day laborers, and of other predominantly male socially disadvantaged people.[1]
