Takayama (高山 市) is a japanese City in the prefecture Gifu in the region Chūbu on Honshu.

Old town

Takayama is located in the old Hida County. Many old and original buildings have survived in it over the centuries, making it a special gem among Japanese small towns, which have often been robbed of their past. This is not the case with Takayama, and so she was able to keep her special charm. The Miya-gawa River flows through it in a north-south direction.

The city had in the 16./17. It was of great importance in the region in the 19th century, as evidenced by the ruins of the castle and the stately construction of Takayama Jinya. However, it was not officially founded until 1936. In the meantime, it has grown rapidly due to incorporations and is called Hida Takayama. The old town center of Takayama is primarily important for tourism.

Take the Hida express train on the JR Takayama Line to reach from Nagoya in 2 1/4 hours 1 Takayama Station. Trains also run on the same line Osaka and Kyoto above Gifu.

There are many bus routes through the Japanese Alps, but they often only run from the beginning of May to the end of October because the passes are closed in winter.

Temples and shrines

  • 1 Hida Kokubun-ji is a temple complex that has existed since the 8th century. It is not far from the train station in the middle of the city.
  • 2 The Shoren-ji was moved here on the occasion of the dam construction in the Shokawa Valley in 1960. You can find it in Shiroyama Park near the old town.
  • The Higashiyama - Temple area is home to more than a dozen temples and shrines, it is east of the city center. (3 Higashiyamashin Shrine)
  • 4  Sakurayama Hachiman-gu. The shrine is at Kitayama Park. It's very close by 5 Takayama Float Exhibition Hall. There is an exhibition of portable shrines that will be carried during the Takayama Fall Festival in early October.

Buildings

  • 7 Takayama-jinya, the former administrative seat of the Kanamori clan, was first built in 1615. The current building dates from 1816. In addition to some government offices, a former torture chamber can also be visited here. Also noteworthy are the old ones Japan-style toilets. Next to the Takayama Jinja there is the Jinja-mae morning market.
  • Furui-machi-nami. On the other side of the Miyagama - The river is the old town center with numerous small old private houses, often small shops selling sake, for example. You can recognize them by the fact that a Sugidama, a ball of cedar needles, hangs in front of the shop. The color of the needles indicates the degree of ripeness of the sake: brown means that the sake is ripe.

  • 8 Hida no Sato, a museum village, just outside. Traditional farmhouses from the Hida region were brought here in 1971 before a reservoir flooded some former villages. Thatched houses, traditional craftsmanship, life in the country.
  • 9 Takayamashi-Kyodokan, Takayama Local History Museum, is dedicated to the wood carving crafts for which the region is known and other local traditions. It also has a collection of works by Enshu, a priest and master of wood carving who lived in the 17th century.

The festival takes place twice a year in Takayama Takayama Matsuri which is one of the largest festivals in Japan. During the Spring Festival (April 14th and 15th) on the southern Sanno-sama shrine is celebrated, the autumn festival (October 9th and 10th) takes place in the north on Hachiman Shrine instead of. The parades in particular, in which a transportable shrine is pulled through the old town like a procession on the first day of these festivals, ensure a high number of visitors.[1]

  • To the Mt. Norikura, a 3026 m high volcanic cone in the east of Takayama. He belongs to the Chubu Mountains National Park.
  • To the Okuhida Spa Resort, an area with hot springs (onsen) in the northeast. The Shin-Hotaka Cable Car, which runs through the northern Japanese Alps, is also nearby.
