The Izu Peninsula (伊豆 半島, Izu hantō) forms the eastern part of the Shizuoka Prefecture on the south coast of the main island Honshu close to Japanese Capital Tokyo. The upstream Izu Islands are administratively subordinate to Tokyo.

background

The peninsula is, according to Hakone, the most important local recreation region for short trips from the capital, which is around 120 kilometers away. Large parts of the coastal strip belong to the Fuji Hakone Izu National Park. Inland, the area is mountainous with the higher mountains Amagi-san (天 城 山). Its individual peaks are called: Bansaburōdake (万 三郎 岳, 1406 m), Banjirōdake (万 二郎 岳, 1300 m and Tōgasayama (遠 笠 山, 1197 m) as well as Atami (773 m) in the eastern and Mt.Daruma (982 m) in the western part .

The west coast, which is not accessible by rail, is significantly quieter than the east coast.

In Mishima one has connection to the Sunzu-Line of private Izu-Hakone-Bahn (伊豆 箱根 鉄 道). This route leads over twenty kilometers to Izu-Nagaoka and Shuzen-ji.

It would be advisable already in Kōzu (国 府 津, Odawara Township), 78 km from Tokyo, to the Gotemba-Line to change, so that one can visit interesting intermediate stops there. This route leads inland around the Fuji to Numazu, the starting point for excursions along the west coast.

In Numazu (沼 津市), a fairly ordinary port city eight kilometers from Mishima, there is little apart from the long, beautiful one Sembon-Beach (with park behind). If the weather is right, you also have a good view of Mount Fuji from there. Thanks to a large fire in 1926 and the American terror bombing in 1944, there is nothing historical to see. The specialty of the place is dried jackfish (Aji; 真 鯵).

Without early reservations, there is hardly any accommodation to be had in July / August. The Japanese like to go for a wet weekend for 1-2 days in groups (or as a couple) and use the all inclusive Packages one Onsen-Hotels where “moist” and “happy” can be mixed in the hot water basin - sake bottles are kept warm while swimming in the basin. Most local tourist offices also arrange accommodation.

The peninsula is well structured for tourism. Even smaller towns offer a selection of Ryōkan and Minshuku, the prices of which are slightly above the national average. Less than ¥ 10,000-15,000 p.p. should definitely not be included in traditional houses.
