background

Mollösund by night

The geographical location was ideal in ancient times, on the open sea, but still protected against wind and waves by the island of Mollon opposite.

Mollösund is one of the oldest fishing villages in the area, dating back to 1500. At that time it was part of the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway and the hub for the lucrative herring fishery. When the herring disappeared poverty came and the fishermen were forced to survive in other ways, including raising cattle on Mollon. In the 1750s the herring came back, society flourished again and the population grew to 500 people. In the early 1900s there were even 1000 residents in Mollösund, which was one of the largest fishing villages at the time. After that, the herring fishery lost its importance, the population declined and today Mollösund is a very remote little place.

Today Mollösund is a popular tourist destination, with a significantly higher population in summer and the buildings in the old part of the municipality are largely used as second homes or holiday apartments.
