Background
The inhabited center was founded on 8 March 1771 on the Cima hill as a residence for workers, artisans, employees, managers and military garrisons committed to carrying out production activities in the Royal Ironworks and Arms Factory established there by the Bourbons. The latter managed to employ up to 2700-2800 people. In Mongiana between 1822 and 1829 the first iron suspension bridge in Italy was built: the "Real Ferdinando" suspension bridge over the Garigliano river, designed on the idea of Prof. Carmine Antonio Lippi, and, between 1832 and 1835, the Bridge "Maria Cristina" on the river Calore Irpino, designed by the engineer Luigi Giura. Also in Mongiana the rails were built for the first Italian railway, the Naples-Portici. Not only that, all the rails of the railway line up to Bologna have been merged and built in the real factory, which has long since been replaced. In addition, the "Mongiana" model infantry rifle was built. The Mongiana Arms Factory was so important that it received a visit from the King of Naples Ferdinand II of Bourbon: precisely on October 16 and 17, 1852. Cavaliere Ferdinando Iorfida lived in Mongiana and had the license n. 1 for Calabria. After the unification of Italy a rapid decline of the productive settlement began.
