Background
Important center of the episcopal power of Luni, the orthogonal village of Montemarcello was mentioned for the first time in 1286 - Mons Marcelli - in a document of the bishop of Luni, Enrico, where it is decided to build defense works along the promontory. In 1327 the Lord of Lucca Castruccio Castracani, owner of the Amegliese fief since 1320, establishes the local podesteria of Ameglia aggregating the village of Montemarcello in the province of Luni; a document attests in 1328 the presence of men from Montemarcello at the first parliament held outdoors in the town of Zanego.
In 1485, which has now become a feudal possession of the Republic of Genoa and with the construction of the local church, the town began to expand and take on the present structure of a fortified village by walls, the latter granted directly by the Genoese senate. In 1487 it suffered for the strong rivalries between Genoa and Florence the siege of the latter which set fire to and devastated the village. In 1817 a violent flood will cause the overflow of the Magra river which will decimate a good number of inhabitants, aggravated, among other things, by the increasingly frequent phenomena of drought which will lead to the compromise of crops in the plain. Numerous casualties and extensive damage will also cause the aerial bombardment in 1944 during the Second World War.

Products of the village are the exceptional figs, which are called binèi; pecorino cheese which is stored in a small jar in oil until it takes on a reddish color; finally the oil; products that, unfortunately, are no longer as widely available as they once were, due to the abandonment of the countryside which, even here, has had a profound impact on the local economy.
