Understand

the Middle Atlas (الأطلس المتوسط in Arab) is a mountain range stretching over some 350 km, from southwest to northeast of Morocco, located between the Rif and the High Atlas, and covering a total area of ​​2.3 million hectares, or 18% of the mountainous area of ​​this country.

It mainly includes the provinces of Khenifra, Ifrane, Boulmane, Sefrou, El Hajeb and Midelt, as well as part of the provinces of Taza and of Beni Mellal - which is referred to as the “gateway to the Middle Atlas”.

This chain belongs to the massif ofAtlas, and more precisely, to one of the three elements of the Moroccan Atlas - the other two being the High Atlas and theAnti Atlas.

The Middle Atlas constitutes a territory with unusual charm, its richness in fauna and flora biodiversity making it a tourist area.

Pastoralism, however, remains the primary economic resource.

Geography

In the heart of these mountains, the longest river in Morocco, the Oum er-Rbia or Oum Errabiaa, has its source at 40 km of Khenifra, to throw oneself 600 km further in the Atlantic at Azemmour (Doukkala). To the west, the Middle Atlas joins the first foothills of the High Atlas. The Middle Atlas is also home to a few small towns of medium altitude, with a typically Berber character. So Ifrane, nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco" for its European-style town planning (stone chalets and red tiled roofs) and its Ifrane national park (rich by its unique Zygènes), Azrou, a former rest station built on the slopes of a cedar grove, and Imouzzer Kandar, Zaouia d'Ifrane: (village in 15 km ofAzrou), El Hajeb, Elksiba, Beni Mellal with its famous lake of Bin El Ouidane formed by Oum Errabiaa and its tributary Oued El Abid.

These towns and their regions offer magnificent landscapes greatly appreciated by hikers in love with the mountains and magnificent lakes, spread between the provinces of Ifrane and Khenifra, housed in the karst formation causse: such Aguelmame Aziza, Aguelmame Sidi Ali, Tiglmamine, Daït Aoua, Afennourir, Daït Afourgah, Dait Iffer, [Aguelmame Ouiouane near the sources of Oum Errabiaa, Aguelmame Tifounassine located at 40 km ofAzrou on the road to Midelt, Aguelmame Abakhane located on the road N ° 33 between Khenifra and Midelt by the village Tighassaline.
