Muiden is a city in the Vechtstreek in the province North Holland at the mouth of the Vecht in the IJsselmeer.

background

Muiden was first mentioned in 953. At that time, Emperor Otto I donated the settlement and the duties collected there to the cathedral chapter of Utrecht. At that time it was still called Amude, "Mouth of the A". "A" is an old name of the Vecht. The location at the mouth of the Vecht was considered so important that the settlement received city rights several times: in 1122 from Emperor Heinrich V, before 1285 from the diocese of Utrecht and again in 1296 from the new sovereign Floris V of Holland attached to a moated castle, which is still a prominent point in the town today. In the first half of the 15th century. the city was fortified for the first time, and in 1590 the city walls were replaced by bastions. End of the 19th century became part of the Muiden Stelling van Amsterdam. During this time, the Forteiland Pampus was built off the coast of Muiden in what was then the Zuiderzee. Today, Muiden is a particularly popular port for sailors.

Legend

Muiden also has its own legend. Fishermen caught a mermaid. While they are discussing who to give them to, the mermaid suggests that they be released, as they cannot survive on land for more than an hour. As a reward she promised rich catches and full nets. When they let her go, she said: Muiden zal Muiden blijven, Muiden zal nooit beklijven. ("Muiden will remain Muiden. Muiden will never stand still.). Then she dived into the depths and was never seen again. In the meantime many cities and villages have blossomed or disappeared, but Muiden will remain Muiden. The mermaid is still in the coat of arms from Muiden to find.
