Munduk is a picturesque place in the center of Bali.

background

The village of Munduk is not spectacular in and of itself. The Munduk region (Munduk, Gesing, Gobleg, Kaya Putih) offers the most beautiful hikes and walks in Bali. The area is not as crowded with tourists as the south, so you can experience pure nature and authentic Balinese culture here.

getting there

Unfortunately, there are hardly any buses to Munduk. Therefore you need your own vehicle or a driver. The accommodations are happy to help. For the more adventurous, the hitchhiking trip also works well. Munduk lies on the north-south axis. A stop here is advisable if you are from Kuta, Sanur or Ubud coming to Amed or Pemuteran travels (or vice versa).

mobility

The best way to move around town is on foot. Basically, nobody is bothered here when private properties are entered. Walks through the rice fields and villages are therefore easily possible.

Tourist Attractions

Red Corral Waterfall in Munduk
  • water falls. There are numerous waterfalls in the gorge north of Munduk, two of which are accessible via tourist footpaths. The falls can be easily found without a guide. The way to Red Corral Waterfall starts at a steep hairpin bend above Munduk, which can be recognized by the labeled parking lot and the tourist shops. The way to Melanting waterfall starts at school SD1 in the village center of Muduk.
  • Rice terraces. In the valley between Munduk and Gesing there are numerous rice terraces that are still largely cultivated manually and provide a picturesque backdrop: romantic Bali, as you can see from the pictures of Walter Spies knows.
  • Crater lakes. The three lakes Tamblingan, Buyan, and Bratan lie in a huge crater. The western half of the crater rim is still intact and offers a spectacular vantage point, while the eastern half has been broken through by a group of younger volcanoes. Danau Tambilngan is the wildest of the three lakes and often shows itself in mystical moods; it is mostly surrounded by jungle, only three temples line its banks. At the Danau Bratan is the famous temple Pura Ulun Danau Bratan, which graces the covers of numerous travel guides. With local tourists in particular, it is one of the narrower circle of indispensable sights in Bali. Probably because of the harsh weather, the temple is usually visited in passing. Hardly anyone spends the night in the vicinity of the lake.
  • Gunung Lesong. The ascent of the 1865 m high Gunung Lesong volcano (alternative spelling: reading) is a great experience for hikers. On the ascent through cultivated land and the jungle thicket, different levels of vegetation are traversed. The path is not traveled very often, but it has a pleasant gradient and is well laid out. In the rainy season it gets very slippery, so the visit is only recommended in the dry season.
  • Traditional dances and music. The centuries-old Balinese tradition is very much alive in the villages around Munduk. There are no tourist performances here like in Ubud or Ulu Watu, Gamelan orchestras and traditional dances are cultivated here for the love of art. If you hear the sounds of gamelon while walking through the village, be sure to follow them! Maybe you get lucky and approach a dance performance or rehearsal. Audience is welcome - travelers who spontaneously stand among the audience are in no way perceived as annoying.

activities

  • Walks on your own. The Munduk region is ideal for exploring on foot. The rice fields and orchards are criss-crossed by numerous footpaths. Popular walks lead to the waterfalls in the gorge north of Munduk or through the rice fields between Munduk and Gesing.
  • Trekking with a guide. The hotels offer guides who lead tourists through the rice fields, to the crater lakes or to the volcanoes. A guide is strongly recommended for hikes in the jungle, otherwise the risk of getting lost is very high. In addition, the guides have interesting things to say about the area.
  • Mountain biking. in the Lesong Hotel Flawless mountain bikes can be rented for IDR 100,000 per day. Scenic routes through varied terrain and some fantastic single trails make Munduk a top bike destination. The hilly surroundings always come up with steep gradients, so it is more for sporty people. Couch potatoes can also be driven up to the edge of the crater by car to relax and enjoy the landscape downhill.
  • canoe. Boat tours on Tamblingan Lake are offered with dugout canoes made by the villagers. The boats are rowed by the local, so it's a bit passive but nice for family outings. The mood at Tamblingan Lake is often breathtaking.
