Ubud is a city on the island of Bali, in Indonesia.
To know
Ubud is a city of around 30,000 inhabitants located in central Bali. Far away from the bikinis nightlife Kuta, is considered the cultural center of the island. Famous for being the nerve center of arts and crafts, in fact much of the city and surrounding villages seem to be workshops and art galleries. There are buildings with noteworthy architecture that you can visit and thanks to the spirit, the climate and the surroundings, you have a feeling of well-being and wanting to be well.Although it seems to be a small town, it is actually made up of fourteen villages, each managed by its own banjar, the village committee. It has grown rapidly and some central parts are struggling to keep up with the flow of visitors. However, the development reflects the spirit of the time and generally follows the local style, the growth continues quickly even if there are still terraced rice fields along the rivers, and far from the center the quiet village life continues undisturbed.

Thanks to its position at 600m a.s.l., Ubud has cooler temperatures than the coast and it is sometimes necessary to bring a sweater for the evening. The midday sun can certainly be scorching and the humidity is often heavy, a fatal combination for visiting temples which here require a lot of trek up and down hills and stairs. It is therefore advisable to go out early to avoid the heat and crowds. The season to avoid would be between January and February when rain in Ubud is serious stuff.
Background
For many reasons the history of the Ubud area (not so much the city) is the history of Bali.
Ubud's history dates back to the 13th century when Buddhist preacher Rsi Marhandya came to Bali from Java and meditated at the confluence of the two Wos rivers in Campuan, just west of the modern city center. A temple was built there, later enlarged by Nirartha, the Javanese preacher known as the founder of the Balinese religious practices and rituals we know today. At the time the area was a center of natural medicine and cures, hence the name Ubud: the ancient Balinese term for medicine is in fact Ubad.
Over the next 400 years, more temples and monasteries were built. Gunung Kawi Monastery Complex, Goa Gajah Cave Temples (just east and northeast of Ubud) are architectural remnants from that period. Many of the dances, rituals and performances that are still practiced today originated during this period. King Airlangga ruled Bali and Java during this era and his government find was in what is now known as the village of Batuan, just southeast of Ubud.
The Javanese kingdom Majapahit conquered Bali in 1343 and the final victory was against the Pejeng dynasty centered in Bedulu, just east of Ubud. From here followed a great rebirth of Balinese culture which gave rise to modern aristocratic families. In the 16th century the Majapahit Kingdom was completely moved to Bali due to the Islamization of Java which pushed them east. Despite the changes between the various dynasties and feudal lords, the Ubud area remained an important center for the various regencies that dominated the island.
In 1900, at its own request, Ubud became a Dutch protectorate and the colonialists did not interfere much, allowing the traditional arts and culture of the area to remain relatively unchanged. The modern era of the city began in the 30s of the last century when foreign artists were encouraged by the royal family to show their presence in the city. From their base in Ubud, personalities such as Walter Spies and Rudolph Bonnet became key figures for world knowledge of understanding Balinese art and culture. From the 1960s travelers began to arrive with interest, and they were very intrepid, because the reception facilities were scarce. Ubud has since developed rapidly into a high-level international definition, continuing to maintain its integrity as a center of Balinese culture and arts.
How to orient yourself

Finding your way here is very simple. The city stretches for many kilometers in all directions, with all the surrounding villages enclosed within a 5km radius of the central market. If you choose a central place to stay, it is very easy to get around on foot.
The city center has three main streets: Jl Raya Ubud, Jl Monkey Forest and Jl Hanoman. At the intersection of Jl Raya and Jl Monkey Forest are the market, the Ubud Palace and the main bus stop. bemo. Without too many surprises, there is a permanent traffic jam here.
Jl Monkey Forest flows south through the city to the Monkey Forest, a man-made green area that houses a wide variety of accommodations, art galleries, cafes and local services such as schools, sports fields, pharmacies and travel agencies. Jl Hanoman runs parallel to Jl Monkey Forest to the east, is quieter and is better for walking.
In the immediate west and northwest are the villages of Campuan (Tjampuhan, Campuhan) isKedewatan home to some of Asia's finest luxury hotels, with panoramic views over the valleys carved by the Ayung and Wos rivers.
Directly to the south, past the Monkey Forest and still less than 20 minutes walk from the central market, is Padang Tegal arriving at the southern villages of Nyuh Kuning is Pengosekan, about 3km from the city center. Directly to the east is the village of Peliatan, and then Teges and Bedulu, where the Elephant Cave is located Goa Gajah.
How to get
By bus
Perama offers direct transfers from Sanur, Lovina, Kuta, Bedugul, Candidasa, is Padang Bai. When arriving from Ngurah Rai International Airport, you must first take a taxi to the Perama side of Kuta while if you go towards the airport there are direct connections which are cheap and convenient, around Rp 50,000. The Perama terminal is less convenient because it is not in the center, but about 2km south, in Padang Tegal, on JL Hanoman just south of the intersection with Jl Monkey Forest.
You can go to the local Tourist Information Office (in the city center at the big intersection in front of the market) and buy tickets, for the same price and they will take care of the transfer to the terminal.
In bemo
There are regular public bemos from Denpasar Batubulan terminal to Ubud which cost Rp 8,000, although the figure for foreigners is Rp 50,000, and take an hour. Most of them leave early in the morning returning in the late morning and in the afternoon it is difficult to find one, so with tourists the drivers insist on taking cars or taxis, costing Rp 200 / 300,000. In the opposite direction, bemos depart every morning from Ubud Central Market, North Entrance.
By taxi or car
If you want to take a taxi to Ubud from the south of Bali, it is best to book a vehicle and ensure your return otherwise you will be overcharged by 30% on the price to leave the city. Metered prices per one way without including surcharges are around Rp 150,000 from Denpasar and Rp 200,000 from Kuta. In Kuta you can also rent a car daily from local rental companies for around USD $ 15-25 with which it will be pleasant to explore the vicinity.
How to get around
Blame Elizabeth Gilbert. Those who managed to read the book Eat, pray, love they may have an idea of what to expect. Ubud is an important part of the quest for heroin fulfillment and the effect that the city has is enormous. Many readers have flocked here in search of the places and people (sometimes managing to find them) described in the book. The characters mentioned can't stand more than the desperate-looking single in their thirties knocking on their door. The economic benefit of the book brought something about when the film of the same name was shot in 2009 with Julia Roberts. However, it must be understood that Ubud cannot guarantee a remedy for every midlife crisis.
The center of Ubud can be explored on foot but for the surrounding areas you need a means of transport.
This city is generally a little quieter and the streets are less busy than the cities on the rest of the island, so even if the traffic is slower than in the center of Kuta, the side streets are usually full of motorbikes. they can find holes that force you to get off the sidewalk, forcing us to walk in traffic.
In bemo
The bemos commute on the main road to and from Ubud and the main pick-up and stop point is the market at the intersection of Jl Monkey Forest and Jl Raya Ubud. Many of these finish their service in the late afternoon, while they are more frequent in the morning.
By taxi
There are no taxis with taxi in the city and the few that are seen, drop passengers in the liitrofe areas.
However, you can meet many locals who offer a taxi service and are sometimes very pushy. Obviously they are not taxis, but normal cars.
If you do not need a taxi it is advisable to avoid eye contact with those offering the ride as they may follow and offer tours of the area. If you are harassed by the insistence, a simple "no, thank you" (or "tidak terima kasih") may suffice.
By private car
Most of the local transport comes in the form of SUVs or mini vans and for specific routes they can be hired with driver. Look for the yellow label on the windshield with an "E" logo, which certifies membership of the Ubud Transport Association. One would have to haggle a little over the price to pay less than a metered taxi. A short ride should be around Rp 20,000 and the driver will be happy to wait if you pay the cost of the return.
There are also some types on motorcycles that offer rides (ojek) and cost about half of the cars.
By car from the hotel
Many hotels are located outside the city and offer regular, free transportation to the city center. If, on the other hand, you want to go further, you should expect to pay a higher price than a taxi.
By motorbike
As everywhere in Bali, motorbike rental is very popular and you can find many options. Expect to spend between Rp 40,000 and Rp 80,000 per day for a new model in good condition. You have to look for the rental agencies on the main roads or ask for help at the hotel. Driving on the other hand can be very confusing as road signs are limited and the roads may all look the same at first, but you can always stop and ask for directions.
By bike
Bicycles can be hired for around Rp 20,000-30,000 per day. There is a great selection available at the corner of the football pitch on Jl Monkey Forest. However, it should be borne in mind that Ubud is very hilly, making cycling more challenging. The traffic on the streets is heavy and they do not respect bicycles.
What see
Ubud is full of attractions and it is therefore advisable to stay there at least a week to be able to visit it and take the time it takes to explore well. Visitors who come here for only two or three days have little chance of understanding what's going on around them.
Important historical sites are located outside the city, some even 20km away, and it is worth joining an organized excursion to visit them. If you decide to independently visit places like Goa Gajah, Gunung Kawi, Pura Kehen and Tirta Empul it is advisable to make sure you find a guide when you arrive otherwise the spiritual and cultural significance is lost, even if you can enjoy the beauty of the place alone.
Temples and historical sites
1 Goa Gajah (Elephant cave), Jalan Goa Gajah. 
Rp 50,000, including sarong rental. 
Mon-Sun 08: 00-18: 00. The central piece is a cave dating back to the 9th century, whose entrance is the mouth of a demon carved into the rock. Inside there are staue Lingam is Yoni and a statue of Ganesha. Near the entrance there are statues guarding the pools and a small path leads to a waterfall, rice fields and the remains of a Buddhist stupa. Some parts of the complex were found in the 1950s. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 
- 2 Kehen Temple (Pure Kehen), Jl Sriwijaya, Bangli (just north of downtown Bangli which is 30 minutes northeast of Ubud). Rp 30,000. Mon-Sun 08: 00-17: 00. One of the most beautiful temples in Bali, just off the beaten track, so with few people. Founded in 1206, it has an 11-layer meru in the inner court. You can park your moped inside and before entering you must wear a sarong to be taken from the shed at the bottom of the stairs, included in the price. It is advisable to take some time to visit the town as well, which is very pretty and centered on the market.
- 3 Saren Agung Temple (Pura Saren Agung, Royal Palace, Water Palace) (from the Ubud market you cross Jl Raya Ubud). Mon-Sun 09: 00-17: 00. It was the palace of the kings of Ubud until the 40s of the last century and some descendants still live here today, so some parts of the complex are off-limits to the public, but the rest is free to enter and is the best place to see shows of dance.
- 4 Gunung Kawi (The mountain of the poet), Tampaksiring (18 km north-east of Ubud). Rp 50,000 including sarong and sash rental. Mon-Sun 07: 00-17: 00. Dating from the 11th century, it is presumed to be the burial complex of King Anak Wungsu and his many wives. It can be reached by going down 371 steps and its position, at the bottom of a steep valley streaked with rice fields, is fantastic. The smaller complex on the south side of the river is presumed to have been built for the king's wives, while the larger one is thought to have been the residence of the king himself and possibly his concubines as well. The structures are carved into the rock walls of a river gorge. About a kilometer away, following the current, there are further burial cloisters. To recover from the fatigue on the way back you can take a break at the Cafe Kawi coffee shop which serves cold drinks from 10,000 rupees. If you take a taxi from Ubud, it should cost no more than 150,000Rp, including return and with the driver waiting for you on the way back.

- 5 Tirta Empul (Pura Tirta Empul), Tampaksiring (follow Jl Raya Tegallalang north for 8 kilometers then turn slightly right across the countryside for 7 kilometers). Rp 50,000, including sarong and sash rental. Mon-Sun 08: 00-18: 00. One of the holiest temples in Bali, built around a hot spring, still active today, in the central courtyard. The Balinese come here to immerse themselves and purify themselves physically and spiritually and during the Galugan the sacred masks barong they are immersed here. During the Kuningam immense queues form to immerse themselves under the row of outlets each of different importance. To enter the central courtyard, where the sacred spring pool resides, everyone must wear the sarong, sash and tie their hair. The complex dates back to 960, but the adjacent buildings are largely modern constructions. To get out of the temple you have to follow a long forced path through a myriad of stalls all selling the same items, so it's a good place to buy souvenirs if armed with patience and the art of bargaining.
- 6 Yeh Pulu, Banjar Batulumbang, Bedulu nr Gianyar (Turn off the main Ubud road to Gianyar about 400 meters east of the entrance to the Goa Gajah complex. Continue along the Banjar Batulumbang until the road ends, then continue on foot along the path.). Rp 30,000, Rp 2,000 for parking the moped. Mon-Sun 07: 00-18: 00. Small temple consisting of a little known complex of carved rocks dating back to the 14th or 15th located near Goa Gajah, therefore quiet, in a fantastic location among the rice fields. Here there is also a sacred well (Yeh Pulu means "Container of water") and the holy woman who resides there blesses the visitors asking for a small offering. As in any temple, sarong must be worn to respect the sacred place. Highly recommended site to visit despite being small and understated. The bizarre souvenir carver inside the area will offer himself as a guide for Rp50,000.
- 7 Chapel of the Mother Goddess, Rajarajeshwari Tripurasundari, Jl. Sri Wedari Km 3 (3km north of Ubud main road), ☎ 62 818 701658, @[email protected]. Free, but donations are welcome. A modern chapel dedicated to the "feminine aspect of the divine", such as Kuan Shih Yin, Mary Magdalene, Our Lady, Lakshmi, Durga, Kali, Saraswati, Gayatri and others.
- 8 Pura Taman Ayun Temple, Jl. Badung 4, Gulingan, ☎ 62 361 9009270. Beautiful temple with a water garden.
Museums and galleries
- 9 Agung Rai Museum of Art (WEAPON), Jl Pengosekan, ☎ 62 361 975 742, @[email protected]. Rp 80,000. 09:00-17:00. It showcases works by Balinese artists as well as international artists who have made Bali their home, such as Walter Spies, Adrian Jean Le Mayeur, Rudolph Bonnet and Arie Smit. Here is the only painting in Bali by the famous Janavese artist Radan Saleh. They also organize workshops on the thirteen aspects of Balinese art and culture. Inside there is a cafeteria.
- 10 Blanco Renaissance Museum, Jl Raya Campuhan, ☎ 62 361 975 502. Rp 80,000. Mon-Sun 09: 00-18: 00. Until his death in 1999, the Spanish artist Antonio Blanco was a constant presence in the art of Ubud. His house which later became a museum showcases his interesting and bizarre works. We must think of a Salvador Dalì transplanted to Asia. In the garden you can take pictures of the exotic birds flying around.
- 11 Puri Lukisan Museum (Museum of Fine Arts), Jl Raya Ubud (on the main street just west of the market), ☎ 62 361 971 159, fax: 62 361 975 136, @[email protected]. Rp 40,000. Mon-Sun 08: 00-16: 00. It was the first private museum to open in 1954. Its three buildings feature traditional and modern Balinese art pieces. The arrangement of the exhibition is a bit old-fashioned and there aren't always labels in English but some of the works are great. Among others there are also works by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and Rudolph Bonnet.
- 12 Rudana Museum, Jl Cok Rai Pudak 44 (on the road to Mas, about a 10 minute drive south from the city center), ☎ 62 361 975 779, @[email protected]. Rp 20,000, free for under 12. Mon-Sat 09: 00-17: 00, Sun 12: 00-17: 00. A great selection of Balinese paintings, both traditional and modern. Run by the owner, the artist Nyoman Rudana, who is often present.

Perhaps the most important art collection in all of Bali is on display here. Six pavilions that house the various collections with rooms dedicated to the artist Arie Smit and I Gusti Nyoman Lempad.
- 14 Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women, Jl Sriwedari 2B, ☎ 62 361 975 485. Tue-Sat 09: 00-17: 00. This gallery exhibits exclusively female art: "Seni" is the Indonesian word for art and "Wati" means woman.
Landscape
The area around Ubud is characterized by paddies that gently follow each other and create that surprisingly beautiful feeling of nature, especially in the south and south-east of the city. Any visitor coming from the south can stop and appreciate the gentle beauty of the landscape.
Much further out, away from the tourist trails, you can explore the rice paddies to the north of the city and a good route is to take the Jl Raya road east from the city center and turn north into the small lane just next to the BCA bank building. . You then proceed on this road through the village of Kutuh continuing for a while, turning where you want. It is a gentle rural area with good views. A great way to explore is by bike as there are no steep hills.
On the opposite side of the city, in the areas of Campuhaun, Sanggingan, is Kedewatan, the landscape changes dramatically and large gorges have been carved into the limestone by the Ayung and Wos rivers. It is therefore not surprising that many five-star hotels have been built in these valleys. It can be explored by motorbike (biking is challenging, the climbs are steep) by heading west out of the city over the Campuhan Bridge. The main road here is Jl Raya Sanggingan and if you keep moving away from the city you will reach the intersection with Jl Raya Kedewatan where you can turn in any direction to continue exploring. Alternatively, you can stop in a hotel or restaurant to have a drink or eat and enjoy the view in a civilized environment. If you have a lot of money in your pocket, the Four Seasons restaurant in Sayan probably has the best views in all of Ayung Gorge. For the more conscientious the option is the good Indus restaurant in Sanginnan, with tables overlooking the River Wos.
- 15 Tegallagang. Northeast of Ubud, the land is starting to get more rolling and is a good place to enjoy views of Bali's classic terraced rice fields. This village is still a tourist trap but it's worth braving the hordes of trinket vendors to see the breathtaking terraces. From the city center, take the Jl Raya road going as far east as possible and then turn north and continue for about nine kilometers until you reach Tegallalang. It is not difficult to find them, there are many bars and cafes lined up one after the other each with the terrace overlooking the rice fields, many with the offer of a swing over the valley. For those traveling north to the area of Kintamani, this place is on the route and is therefore an easy stop.

A splendid 2 hectare park with over 250 bird species in well thought out enclosures. Here they have a modern and wise attitude to exhibit animals and it is clear from the aviaries open to the passage and the number of free birds inside the park. Inside there is also a noteworthy café. One of the best formal attractions in Bali.
- 17 Botanical Garden, Kutuh Kaja (on the way to Kutuh Kaja village which flows north from JL Raya Ubud near the BCA bank). Rp 50,000. Mon-Sun 08: 00-18: 00. Recently opened, it is a beautiful way to spend a few hours walking and exploring the valley that hosts it. It is advisable to go in the morning to avoid the heat of the afternoon.
- 18 [link previously not working]Monkey Forest, Jl Monkey Forest, ☎ 62 361 971 304, @[email protected]. Adults Rp 50,000, children under 12 Rp 40,000. You follow a defined path in a sacred forest full of hungry monkeys, so it is best not to bring any food to avoid being bitten and get angry. If you get bitten you should visit the emergency room near the entrance at the bottom of the Jalan Monkey Forest. If you want to feed the monkeys despite the risks, there are bananas for sale. During the walk, surrounded by greenery among statues depicting divinities and monsters displaying various virility and fertility, you will also reach the "temple of the dead" Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal and the temple of the spring, with a beautiful bridge. It is recommended that you visit the website before going there. Monkeys are aggressive animals, so extreme caution is advised. The suggestions at the park entrance are:
- . Don't Panic - If the monkeys jump on you, let go of the food, if you have any, and walk slowly. They will come down.
- . Don't rush - If the monkeys come close don't scream, you will scare them.
- . Don't look monkeys in the eye - it is interpreted as a message of defiance.
- . Don't hide food - because the monkeys will know and try to find it.
- . Don't bring any kind of plastic or paper bag - to keep the forest clean and prevent monkeys from playing with it.

- . Never touch or disturb the monkeys - They might touch you but don't touch them because their reactions are unpredictable.

- 19 The White Herons of Petulu, Petulu Kokokan (At the crossroads of the statue of Arjuna, turn left to the north and continue for 2km until you meet a small road on the left, Tirta Tawar. Shortly after we reach the village.). Free offer at the observation point. Each evening, approximately 15,000–20,000 cattle egrets, commonly known as white herons, in Balinese "kokokan", alight in the village of Petulu ten minutes north of Ubud. It is a fascinating sight, the return to the nest of these countless birds, which alight in all the trees along the road. Every morning at dawn they leave en masse in search of places to rest around the island. They can therefore be observed walking along the only road in the town, paying attention to the "releases" from above, or just go up to the observation point in the center of the town. These birds are also accompanied by fewer small herons and Javanese pond herons. According to local legend, herons appeared here in large numbers after one of the worst massacres of suspected Communists during the 1965 troubles that led locals to believe they are the souls of the dead. Another story has it that they came to nest here in 1965, and at first many people caught specimens both to eat them and to keep them in cages. Later all the specimens were released, because many of them are said to have had a meeting or or dreamed of a large and disturbing figure. After consulting a preacher, it was decided to stage an apology ritual in the village temple, during which the village official fell into a trance and recognized the birds as the reincarnation of the "rencang" guard Ida Betara, protector of the country. Since a monument was built to leave offerings to, the village has flourished with abundant harvests. Even today, ceremonies are carried out. There are signs indicating the observation point and it is advisable to arrive an hour before sunset.

On the way to the Pura Kehen temple it is worth a refreshing stop and why not a swim in these waterfalls at the bottom of a valley. In the perimeter there is also a Warung restaurant, bathrooms and changing rooms. Just outside there are stalls for eating and drinking.

What to do
As a center of the arts, Ubud offers dance and shadow theater performances every night. There are also many wellness centers to resynchronize the chakras and all kinds of classes and treatments, some less genuine than others.

Cultural shows
- Barong dance, Batubulan (about 15 minutes south of Ubud on the main road towards Sanur). Rp 80,000. Mon-Sun 09:30. The barong dance show takes place every day and lasts about an hour. It is a tourist attraction and the story is about the never-ending struggle between good and evil. There really isn't a lot of dance but a lot of storytelling. When buying tickets, the show you will be attending is described.

Rafting
C'è una buona scelta di rafting disponibile nel fiume Ayung a Sayan, appena fuori da Ubud. L'esperienza di per sé è ottima e porta nel bel mezzo della gola del fiume. Questo è il domino di resort di alto livello come il Four Season e l'Amadari. Le rapide sono di classe II e III e sono migliori durante la stagione delle piogge in quanto il fiume si prosciuga un po' tra giugno e settembre. Ci sono due opeatori ben consolidati con uffici sulla strada principale di Sayan, vicino ad Amadari, ed altri che hanno aperto più di recente.

Shopping
Ubud ha un grande assortimeto di negozi d'arte e gioielleria. Per le merci di migliore qualità (e prezzo più alto) ci si deve dirigere sulle strade Jl Monkey Forest e Jl Raya Ubud, altrimenti al mercato si trovano cose più economiche prodotte in serie.
- 1 Mercato di Ubud (Ubud Market) (all'angolo tra le strade Jl Monkey Forest e Jl Raya Ubud). Labirinto di bancarelle su due piani nel quale si trovano legni intagliati, magliette in batik, sarong ed ogni sorta di souvenir indirizzati ai turisti. I mercanti contrattano con i turisti per tirare a campare quindi in genere partono da prezzi circa dieci volte il valore vero, quindi pensiamoci bene prima di comprare. I negozi al piano superiore in genere vendono le stesse cose a prezzi ridotti anche se ci sarà sempre bisogno di utilizzare le migliori tecniche di contrattazione. Si consiglia di evitare gli orari tra le 11:00 e le 14:00 quando gli autobus delle gite guidate arrivano in massa. Se si noleggia un'auto per la giornata si consiglia di dirigersi ai negozi di Tegallalang dove vendono all'ingrosso. Il mercato Sukawati è affollato e vende gingilli in quantità di dubbia qualità.
Sulla strada per Petulu e le risaie di Tegallagang, si passa davanti ad una moltitudine di negozi e laboratori d'arte ed artigianali. Vale la pena prendersi del tempo per scegliere un piccolo souvenir o addirittura riprogettare casa.
Villaggi artigianali tra Ubud e Sanur
La strada di 25km per Ubud da Sanur al sud passa attraverso una serie di cittadine e villaggi specializzati nella produzione di particolari arti e mestieri. I paesi sono Batubulan/Singakerta per le pietre scolpite, Celuk per l'argenteria, Batuan per i quadri e Mas per il legno intagliato. Tutta l'area viene spesso chiamata i "villaggi dei mestieri" di Bali anche se sono più trafficati e un po' troppo costruiti per essere chiamati villaggi.
Questa è l'area migliore di atelier in stile balinese tra i quali scegliere per comprare artigianato balinese, se si ha poco tempo. Quasi tutte le gite organizzate si fermano a uno di questi negozi dove i tour operator si prendono la loro quota, quindi attenzione perché i prezzi prevedono il compenso per l'autista.

Moltissime fragranze tra le quali scegliere a prezzi d'ingrosso. Bellissima posizione con vista sulle risaie, da non mancare.
- 3 Ganesha Bookstore, Jl Raya, @[email protected]. Mon-Sun 09: 00-18: 00. Libri di seconda mano con una buona selezione di libri su Bali e l'Indonesia. Aperto dal 1986 oggi ha un'altra sede a Seminyak.
- 4 Biblioteca Pondok Pecak (Pondok Pekak Library & Learning Centre), Jl Monkey Forest (accanto al campo di calcio provenendo da Jl Monkey Forest), ☎ 62 361 976 194. Mon-Sun 09: 00-17: 00. Biblioteca comunitaria indipendente con una buona selezione di romanzi e altri genere in vendita. Comprando qui si aiuta nella missione di fornire libri di scuola gratuiti ai bambini balinesi. Quando si visita vale la pena chiedere se ci sono degli spettacoli culturali. C'è anche una caffetteria che serve spuntini fatti in casa.
- 5 Mercato d'arte Sukawati (Sukawati Art Market), Sukawati (a circa 30 minuti a sud di Ubud sulla strada principale per Sanur). 06:00-18:00. Questo mercato enorme è come un negozio che racchiude tutti i prodotti artigianali dei villaggi tra Sanur e Ubud. Molti negozianti attorno a Bali acquistano i loro prodotti qui e i prezzi sono molto più bassi rispetto ai centri turistici come Kuta, Sanur e il centro di Ubud. Per mangiare si può amdare al mercato alimentare, che si trova di fronte.

Ubud non è una città nella quale si festeggia molto: ci sono pochi posti per bere qualcosa e le leggi rigide riguardo agli spettacoli dal vivo e la musica ad alto volume mettono termine alle 22:30 alla vita notturna. La gran parte dei turisti qui beve qualcosa durante la cena poi si ritira.

Cibo, musica, ping pong, freccette, calcio balilla, video giochi, biliardo rendono l'atmosfera un punto d'incontro per la gente del posto con gli immigrati occidentali e turisti. Ogni martedì torneo di 8 palle e il venerdì 10 palle, aperto a tutti.

Where to eat
Ubud è molto famosa a Bali per la grande varietà di ristoranti ed è probabilmente seconda soltanto a Seminyak in termini di qualità e di offerta. I viaggiatori con pochi soldi non dovranno preoccaparsi per trovare opzioni in quanto ci sono vari "warung" moto semplici che servono i piatti standard indonesiani.

- 2 [link not working]Warung Dewa, Jalan Gootama No.13, ☎ 62 813 3726 8250. Mon-Sun 10 am-9pm. Uno dei posti economici migliori della città. Serve il solito cibo balinese e piatti indonesiani. Il piatto più costoso sul menù ha un prezzo di Rp20.000.

The babi guling (maiale cotto alla diavola), servito con riso e verdure piccanti, è famoso in tutto il mondo e questo posto così modesto è in realtà meta di pellegrinaggi. Si può ordinare lo special (Rp 55.000) per avere un po' di tutto, comprese interiora e salsicce di sangue. Ci sono tavoli e sedie ma si può anche sedere a terra attorno ai tavoli più bassi dentro il bale (tendone).

Anna è colei che vi accoglierà con intelligenza e spirito e quando non serve altri clienti, si ferma volentieri al tavolo ad animare la conversazione. Ottimo posto dove socializzare con persone interessanti e passare una buona serata.

Piccolo e ordinatissimo warung gestito da Ayu, una ragazza molto simpatica e bravissima cuoca, ottimi anche i frullati alla frutta, da provare quello all'avocado e cacao. Non c'è un menu, ma c'è Ayu che si prende cura di voi con quello che è stato preparato per il giorno. Molto buono, prezzi onestissimi.

Senza troppe sorprese, qui il cibo taiwanese è in voga, quindi si può cogliere l'occasione di provare la zuppa di funghi e maiale o altri stufati che questa cucina ha da offrire. Servono anche cibo di altre regioni della Cina oltre ai piatti tipici balinesi, o una versione fusion di questi. La "De Ubud Villas & Spa", sul retro, è dello stesso proprietario.

Si consiglia di provare il menu degustazione.
Where stay
Ubud ha una vasta selezione di alloggi per tutte le tasche. Molti visitatori preferiscono stare nelle vicine aree rurali invece del centro, idealmente con vista sui campi di riso anche se aumenta la difficoltà di spostamento. L'offerta è talmente ampia che si può arrivare in città senza aver prenotato e camminare nelle vie laterali alle principali per trovare lunghe file di "homestay" molto belli tra i quali scegliere.
Moderate prices
In città ci sono molti alloggi a gestione familiare che sono l'opzione più economica e un buon modo per incontrare la gente del posto e sono un rimpiazzo naturale agli ostelli. Se si vuole stare in città, la zona attorno a Jl Monkey Forest è in genere la più cara (da Rp 80.000-100.000 per notte). Se si vogliono prezzi più economici si deve provare la zona attorno Jl Hanoman a nord di Jl Raya Ubud e più fuori verso Peliatan. In bassa stagione specialmente, per coloro in grado di contrattare si possono avere buone offerte. Jn Kajeng, vicino al centro è una strada tranquilla, quasi tutta pedonale con molti alberghetti; quelli sul lato ovest hanno la vista sul retro che da sul fiume, sulla cascata o sui campi di riso.

Immerso nel bel mezzo delle risaie, silenzioso e lontano dalla confusione della città, è un posto inusuale dove poter godere un po' di relax. Raggiungibile a piedi seguendo stretti sentieri tra le coltivazioni ad est di Ubud. Quando si arriva si viene accolti dal personale gentile con una bibita fresca, dopodiché si verrà accompagnati alla sistemazione scelta e istruiti sul funzionamento della struttura. Se si è scelto di dormire nei "nidi", questi sono una struttura verticale a baccello con quattro nidi in vimini e bambù, posti uno sopra l'altro. Praticamente non ci sono pareti e per dormire si devono calare le zanzariere interne per creare un po' di intimità e protezione dagli insetti. Il bagno dei nidi è condiviso, mentre le altre strutture sono private. Prima di arrivare è consigliabile avvertire in modo che vengano a prendere sulla strada principale per aiutare col bagaglio. Si consiglia inoltre di prenotare con largo anticipo a causa della disponibilità limitata.

Safety
Ubud is a safe city to visit and there will be few problems, but before leaving it is advisable to deepen the information reported in the main article of Bali.

You have to pay attention to monkeys occupying the Monkey Forest. They are very experienced and steal everything from glasses to earrings, cameras to bags and attack those who have food. Bali is currently struggling with the spread of rabies and very easily these animals are carriers. No matter how cute they are, giving them food means looking for trouble.
Health
Dengue fever outbreaks are not uncommon, so one must be diligent with mosquito repellent. There is no actual hospital in Ubud and the closest is about 20km to the south in Denpasar. However, there is a sufficient number of tourist assistance clinics.

How to keep in touch
Post office
There is an old-fashioned post office on the Jl Raya Ubud side of Jl Jembawan. If you are staying in the city for a period, this office can be used as a post office box. Passport must be presented to take parcels or mail.

Telephony
The Ubud prefix is 0361. For calls from abroad, dial 62 361 followed by the telephone number.
All Indonesian mobile phone companies have full coverage in the Ubud area. If you need to make a phone call to an international landline there are many specialized shops (wartels) who offer this service. As in the rest of Bali, the few existing public telephones hardly work.
Internet
Most internet cafes have a rather slow connection even if they are cheap, around Rp 6,000 per hour. The only place with a fast connection is Highway, on the main road in Ubud, but it is much more expensive.
In cafes and restaurants, Wi-Fi is very popular and if you have your own computer without the need for too much speed, it is the best option. However, it seems that the availability of navigation is less than the opening hours. KAFE, for example, has an excellent and consistently fast connection in a great environment but is only available from opening until noon and from 3pm to 6pm.

Ubud is in a good location for getting around to other parts of the island.
- If you head east, the road passes by Candidasa going beyond Klungkung it is often used by many trucks even if it is pleasant to drive.
- Bedugul it's about an hour's drive north, here is a traditional fruit market, a beautiful botanical garden and the temple Ulun Danu Bratan and it's about an hour's drive north.
- In the region around Tabanan There is the Mount Batukaru and the Batukaru temple, as well as the rice fields around Jati Luwih, about an hour's drive north.
- Lovina is a quiet seaside town with black sand beaches, about a two-hour drive north.
