The Alps are a series of mountains Europe caused by the uplift of the European continental plate, which is affected by the African plate moving north. They stretch from Italy, through France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria to the former Yugoslav republic, Slovenia.

The highest peaks in Europe (outside the Caucasus Mountains) are in the Alps. Mont Blanc (4810 meters), Dufour Peak (4634 meters) and the famous Matterhorn (4478 meters) are officially well-known alpine heights of four thousand.
