background

Nördlingen belongs next Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber one of the best preserved medieval imperial cities in Germany. A completely preserved city wall with 5 towers and 11 gates extends around the medieval city center. Nördlingen impresses with a completely preserved cityscape. The city was first mentioned as a royal court in 898, but dates back to an older Roman settlement from the 1st to 3rd centuries. Skull finds in the nearby Ofnet cave show that the Nördlinger Ries has been inhabited by people for over 7,700 years. Frederick II later elevated the city to the status of a Free Imperial City and in the Middle Ages it became one of the most important trade fair locations in southern Germany. In the Thirty Years' War the Swedish army is defeated for the first time near Nördlingen. In 1802 the imperial city loses its independence and becomes part of Bavaria.

Nördlingen is located in the middle of the Nordlinger Ries - the impact crater of a meteorite that struck the northern edge of the Swabian Alb about 15 million years ago. Today the crater measures 25 kilometers in diameter and was filled with water for a long time. It was not until 1960 that the previous thesis that the crater was the result of volcanological processes could be refuted by the American scientists Shoemaker and Chao. In 1970 NASA trained with astronauts for the Apollo missions in the Ries, as it is similar to the craters on the moon. As a thank you, real moon rock is exhibited in the Ries Crater Museum as a permanent loan from NASA.
