What see

Naxos seafront near the port
  • Palatia. An islet north of the port, joined to the mainland by a jetty. There is the portal (Porttora in Greek) of the unfinished temple of Apollo dating back to the time of the tyrant Ligdamis (6th century BC).
  • Venetian castle - A fortress from the early 13th century, built by Marco Sanudo, nephew of Doge Enrico Dandolo and first Duke of Naxos. The castle is surrounded by pentagonal walls with 3 access doors. Note the Crispi bastion (or Glezos) and the tower of Marco Sanudo. Inside there are ruins of mansions from the 14th and 15th centuries. Within the walls are also located the monastery of the Capuchin Friars and that of the Ursulines, the archaeological and Byzantine museums, the Catholic cathedral dedicated to St. Anthony and the Catholic episcopal palace. The panorama is remarkable.
  • Archaeological Museum - with collections of Mycenaean ceramics and idols from the Cycladic period.
  • The small churches of Naxos are little more than chapels. The most interesting are:
    • Panagia Myrtidiotissa - On the islet in the middle of the port area.
    • Agios Georgios - On the beach of the same name south of the center.
    • Agios Hryssostomos - A white church on a hill in a panoramic position.
    • Panagia Pantanassa (Most Holy Virgin) - In the Bourgos district with a highly revered icon of the Madonna

Three kilometers north-east from the center is the monastery of San Giovanni Chrisostomos from the 17th century but restored at a later time. Near the monastery, on a rock is the Theologaki church.
