background

Probably in the 2nd millennium BC Hittites settled here on the slope of the Kahveci mountain and named the place Nyssa. In order to improve the water supply, the river Kızılırmak was rerouted north. After the great Hittite empire collapsed around 1200, Nyssa fell in the 7th century BC. under Assyrian control. Phrygian and Persian rule followed. Around 300 BC. Alexander the Great conquered Nyssa and formed from the regions Nyssa (Nevşehir), Niğde and Masaka (today's Kayseri ) the Kingdom of Cappadocia. In the 1st century BC finally Nyssa was incorporated into the Roman Empire together with the Kingdom of Cappadocia. After Rome, Ostrom and from it the Byzantine Empire had grown, the city fell to the Seljuks in 1071. After the collapse of the Seljuk Empire in the 14th century. AD the city, which was now called Muskara, came under the rule of the Ilhans, the caramans and finally the Ottomans, who renamed the city Nevşehir (New City). In the following years the city was completely redesigned and numerous baths, madrasas and mosques were built. In 1954, Nevşehir County became Nevşehir Province.
