Nidda is a city in the Wetterau, located in the state Hesse.
background
Nidda was first mentioned in a document at the beginning of the 9th century. In 1205 Count Rudolf II von Ziegenhain inherited the county of Nidda through marriage. Folkhold von Warthbleche moved from his brother Udalrich's castle near Zierenberg to Nidda on the property of his family and became Count of Nidda. From 1258 and later in 1311 the counties of Ziegenhain and Nidda were divided again by inheritance. In 1311 Johann I von Ziegenhain married the heiress Lukardis of Count Engelbert I from Nidda. In 1333 he reunited both counties. Later the county of Nidda came into the possession of the Landgrave of Hesse. The Bad Salzhausen spa is now part of Nidda.

Churches
- The City Church to the Holy Spirit was built in 1615-1618 in the Renaissance style. The crucifix from the 17th century is interesting because it bears the inscription INRI in Latin, Greek and Hebrew.
- The Johanniterturm is left over from the eighth oldest Johanniter commandery in Germany. In 1491/92 the tower was added to the Romanesque nave of the Johanniterkirche, which was still in existence at the time. The church was first mentioned in 1187 in a deed of donation from Count Berthold von Nidda to the Johanniter. The church was probably a Romanesque pillar basilica with a central nave, two side aisles and five altars. To this day there are three bells hanging in the Johanniterturm, which are among the oldest and most beautiful bells in Hesse (cast in 1519, 1572 and 1625).
Castles
- The Castle of Nidda is today the district court. It was built on the foundations of the old moated castle of Count Bertold von Nidda in the Renaissance style around 1600. It served as the seat of the bailiffs who were appointed by the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt for administration. In 1889 the prison was built in the castle courtyard. Young offenders still sit here on weekends. In summer, cultural events such as theater and pantomime as well as music events take place in the castle courtyard every year.
Places
- The Market fountain. The market fountain in the middle of the market square was provided with a new top made of red sandstone in 1650, which bears the then Nidda city coat of arms with the eight-pointed star of the Counts of Nidda. The following slogan adorns the fountain: "I stand here on the open market, give up my truth without validity, whoever has pleasure drinkin 'wans him, whether I am already being disregarded, so my strength is in God's power, who reads his little fountains, which the poor as well as the rich have to enjoy ".
Other sights
- Child stone a megalith made of phonolite (Klingstein) stands in the district of Unter-Widdersheim. A memorial plaque on the Kindstein tells his story.
