Language
Historically, in Northern Germany mainly the Low German (or Low German) dialects were spoken, which are related to dialects such as Gronings, Twents and Achterhoeks. Although the Low German dialects are still spoken in a number of areas, they have largely been supplanted by the standard German language (also called High German). Smaller languages such as Danish (in Schleswig-Holstein) and the Frisian dialects have continued to develop in a similar way, but have persisted in small communities.
