The region borders on Baixadas to the south, the Serrana microregion to the west, and the Noroeste Fluminense, to the northwest.

- Campos dos Goytacazes - The largest city in the interior of the state.
- Carapebus - City with many lakes and beaches.
- Macaé - Economic hub focused on oil.
