Novara is a city of Piedmont north ofItaly.
Understand
Novara is the capital of the homonymous province, the second largest city in Piedmont after Turin. It is the easternmost capital of the region, about 15 km from the border with Lombardy. The city in fact revolves more around Milan than Turin and is considered, by history, language and culture, more Lombard than Piedmontese.
Novara is neither a city with a particular tourist vocation nor a “city of art”, but it preserves interesting artistic and architectural treasures such as the daring dome of the Basilica San Gaudenzio, symbol of the city itself, and the Early Christian baptistery in the dome, one of the oldest religious buildings in Piedmont.
To go
Novara is located in the part of the Padanian plain of Piedmont, in the middle of a large area characterized by the cultivation of rice. The rice fields are indeed the predominant element of the landscape around the city.
The historic center rises on a modest hill relief of moraine origin which rises about ten meters above the surrounding territory.
By plane
The main airports nearby are:
- 1 Milan-Malpensa Airport
- 2 Turin-Caselle Airport
By car
The city is served by two tolls on the highway Turin-Trieste:
- Novara Ovest (8 km from the center), for those coming from Turin.
- Novara Est (6 km from the center), for those coming from Milan.
It is also accessible from the highway from the toll:
- Vercelli is (15 km from the center), for those coming from Genoa.
Novara is partially surrounded by a ring road that connects the Strada Statale 32 of the lake maggiore (towards Arona) to the north, with Strada Statale 11 (towards Turin) to the south-west of the city.
Traffic restriction:
From February 2013, the driving ban applies to all petrol vehicles that do not meet at least the Euro 2 standard and diesel vehicles below the Euro 3 standard. The ban applies from Monday to Friday in the time slots 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Motorists can leave the car in one of the free parking lots located at the gates of the city and continue by public transport.
By train
Novara is served by two stations:
- 3 Novara FS – For the Turin-Milan, Alessandria-Arona, Biella-Novara, Novara-Domodossola, Novara-Oleggio and Novara-Varallo lines (currently suspended).
- 4 Novara North – For the Novara-Milano Cadorna line
There is also a third station in the Vignale district, used only for local trains along the Novara-Arona line.
Circulate
The historic city center has an almost pentagonal shape and is surrounded largely by the “ramparts”, tree-lined avenues that replaced the ancient walls that surrounded the city.
The two main north-south arteries are Corso Cavour and Corso Mazzini, Corso Italia and Corso Cavallotti, in the east-west direction, corresponding to the layout of the ancient Cardo and Decumanus Romans.
To see
Religious architecture
- 1 Basilica of San Gaudenzio – The Basilica of San Gaudenzio is a minor basilica, the highest point of the city (the dome measures 122 m). It is dedicated to Gaudence de Novare, Christian bishop of the city.
- 2 Dome (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) – The Dome of Novara (Duomo di Novara or Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Italian) is an imposing neoclassical religious building, built between 1863 and 1869 from designs by architect Alessandro Antonelli
- 3 Sant'Eufemia Church – The first mention of the church dates back to 1124, when the bishop of Novara, Litifredo, allows the rector of the brotherhood of the same name to celebrate the liturgies of Christmas, Epiphany, Easter and Pentecost there. The church was administered by the Brotherhood of San Defendente until 1586, when they joined the Brotherhood of the Holy Trinity of Pilgrims of Rome. From then on, the church assumed the title of “Pilgrims' Hospice”, maintained until the end of the 19th century. By the middle of the 17th century, the church was in decline. Thanks to large donations the fraternity rebuilt the building in 1666, according to the instructions dictated by Saint Charles Borromeo. The reconstruction is attributed to the architect A. Pellegrini. The facade was completed in 1698 and restored in 1787.
