Olomouc - the statutory city in the eastern part Of the Czech Republic, on the Upper Moravian Depression, at the mouth of the Młyński Potok and Bystrzyca to Morawa. It is the capital Olomouc country, Olomouc County, as well as the Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church and the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, and the Eparchy of the Czech and Slovak Orthodox Church. It is the historical capital of Moravia and the main city in the ethnographic region of Haná.

Characteristic

the town hall and the Holy Trinity Column on the main square in Olomouc

The first written mention of a settlement in Olomouc comes from almost a thousand years ago, when the Chronicle of the Cosmas described a fortified castle on the important Morava river on the road between Krakow and Prague. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Olomouc served as a strategically important fortress. The city is today the seat of the regional government, the Moravian Archbishopric and the oldest university in Moravia, Palacky University (Universita Palackého).

Legend claims that the city was founded by Julius Caesar. It is almost certain that Caesar never visited them in person, but it is known that the city started out as a Roman military camp called Julia Mons (Julius' Hill). The name gradually deteriorated into its present form, Olomouc. Roman influence is the proud heritage of the city and manifests itself in many areas.

Olomouc is undoubtedly an undiscovered jewel of the Czech Republic. It is home to countless beautiful buildings, great culture (the seat of the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra and hundreds of unique restaurants, bars and pubs. Olomouc is completely beyond the reach of most tourists' joy, feeling calm, normal and relaxed even on a nice day in July.

Olomouc is the country's largest student city by population as home to Palacky University. Palacký University (named after František Palacky, the most influential figure of the Czech National Revival in the 19th century) is one of the country's largest and most prestigious universities, and only Charles University in Prague has a longer history. In the academic year, the city's population increases by approximately 20,000 students, giving the city a vivid sense of life and energy. It's important to remember if you want to enjoy the city's thriving nightlife - many bars and clubs depend on the student population and the proximity to the holiday.

Olomouc has been the seat of a Catholic Archbishop for almost 1,000 years, so it has some of the most beautifully decorated churches in Central Europe - though they won't appear in many travel guides.

It is the second largest historical square in the Czech Republic. Don't miss the Astronomical Clock in the town hall. It is said to once rivaled the beauty of the Prague clock, but was badly damaged in World War II and then rebuilt and repainted at the beginning of the communist regime to reflect workers' values.

The column contains sculptures of the Holy Trinity, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, all twelve apostles, three virtues and the most important saints of the Baroque period. The base of the column contains a small chapel with amazing acoustics and the raised pedestal is a very pleasant place to sit and eat lunch. It is one of the traditional meeting points in the city.

At noon, the clock has a presentation that is unique to its structure and design. Olomoucké tvarůžky, local cheese

The traditional cuisine of Olomouc and the Haná area is an excellent example of Czech cuisine. In addition to the more popular Czech dishes, it contains some unique local specialties. One of the area's most famous culinary products is local cheese Olomoucké tvarůžky (also called Olomoucké syrečky). It is a traditional (since the 15th century) Czech soft ripened cheese with a very low fat content, pungent taste and strong aroma. The cheese is named after the city of Olomouc, but is produced in Loštice, a small town about 30 km away. Although cheese is widely available in stores across the country (and often eaten raw, usually with beer), you must visit the Haná region to find cheese-based dishes on the restaurant's menu. For example, cheese can be used as a filling in the local Cordon Bleu variety or it can be served fried. Foods containing this cheese can usually be recognized by the name Loštické. Due to the strong smell, do not be surprised to find some mint sweets (Hašlerka) on your plate.

Garlic soup (česnečka) is available throughout the country. The garlic soup from the Haná region (Hanácká česnečka) is one of the best varieties and is usually very strong. If olomoucké tvarůžky is added, the soup is called Loštická česnečka. Due to the combined power of garlic and strong mature cheese, it is not recommended if you plan to kiss someone in the evening. Garlic, on the other hand, is very healthy and you should get some česnečka if you have a cold or a sore throat.

Hanácký koláč is the typical sweet cake of the region.

Restaurants

There are dozens of excellent restaurants in the city, most of them offering English menus. Local favorites are Cafe Caesar, which is located in the Renaissance town hall building in the main square. Wine

Wine is the driving force of Moravia. Check out the "vinarna" (wine cellar) or "Vinný sklep" (wine cellar) and you will see a wide variety of wines from this region. Most of the vineyards are located in South Moravia, but the drinking capacity of North Moravia is not affected. You can buy good Moravian wine for a picnic from a vinny shop in plastic bottles that you will bring yourself or find there.

If someone told you that Moravian wine is worse than French or Italian wine, don't believe them. The taste and aroma of Moravian wines differ from their Western European cousins because they are made from completely different grape varieties. Svatovavrinecké is a strong, dry red wine, Modrý Portugal is medium dry and Frankovka is a sweeter red wine. Good white wines are Muller Thurgau and Veletinské.

Najbliżej Ołomuńca i Svatý Kopeček (Święta Góra), rezerwat przyrody Litovelské Pomoraví i otwory do pływania w Poděbrady i Výkleky.
