The place Oppurg lies in the Oral cavity, about midway between Poessneck and Neustadt (Orla). The Oppurger Castle, more precisely its predecessor, was originally a sibling of the castle in Ranis.

Rail travelers use the Saalfeld – Gera line. There is a regional train connection every other hour. The RegionalExpress trains, which also run every two hours, run through Oppurg with the exception of daytime connections.

Oppurg is via the B 281 from Triptis to Saalfeld, part of the “Thüringer Porzellanstraße” on this section and part of the “Deutsche Alleenstraße” between Saalfeld and Pößneck. At Triptis there is a connection to the A 9 motorway. In the course of the six-lane expansion of the A 9, the B 281 was also expanded. So you can now visit the city quite quickly Neustadt (Orla) drive around, while driving through town was previously considered an ordeal (which is not to say that Neustadt is not worth visiting). In Pößneck, too, the main road was relocated from the town center, but no complete bypass was built. As direction Jena you use the B 88 bis Orlamünde and then drives through the Orlatal in the direction of Pößneck, where the road meets the B 281.

The baroque Oppurg Castle is located on the northern edge of the village and was built between 1708 and 1714.   • Poessneck (5 km to the west, B 281) - largest city in the Orlasenke; organized the first Thuringian State Garden Show in 2000.
  • Neustadt (Orla) (8 km east, B 281) - the second largest city in the Orlasenke after Pößneck; between the market square and the church square are the only meat banks preserved in Europe.
  • Orlamünde (15 km northwest, B 281 to before Pößneck, then Jenaer Straße) - im Saale valley and - as the name suggests - located at the mouth of the Orla.
  • Ziegenrück (15 km south, via Oberoppurg) - very small town (less than 1000 inhabitants) between the Hohenwarthe and Bleiloch reservoirs in Thuringian Slate Mountains; Hydroelectric Museum.
