Father Bernard - Padre Bernardo

Father Bernard is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Goiás, distant 111 km from Brasilia.

Understand

In the mid-1930s, pilgrims originating from neighboring regions, mainly from the Vá dos Angicos, began the tradition of holding a party in praise of the Holy Spirit, in the area where the settlement would develop.

In 1951, land was donated for the religious function by Jerônimo de Amorim, who contributed ten alqueires to the Holy Patron Saint Divino Espírito Santo, the place where the Church of the Divino Espírito Santo is located today. In 1957, the urban nucleus was founded by professor José Monteiro Lima, who divided his Barro Alto Farm into farms and lots, donating families without resources and selling to those who wanted to settle in the region, so that the District had a great impulse and soon emancipate. This occupation developed about 12 kilometers to the left of the Maranhão River, on the banks of the Córrego Barro Alto. The name of Father Bernardo was, in fact, made official by law of November 22, 1955. The name is a tribute to the parish priest of Luziania, who constantly visited the new town in order to hold weddings and baptisms, in addition to meeting the local religious demand. 1963, through the Project Authored by Deputy Olinto Meireles, and through State Law nº 4797, the District was elevated to the category of Municipality, constituting a judicial term of the District of Luziânia, taking place on May 9, 1964.

Padre Bernardo has peculiarities and characteristics that determine the origin of his people, that is, there is cultural miscegenation between mineiros, northeastern people, remnants of other parts of the country and the state of Goiás itself.
