Luziania is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Goiás. It is the fifth largest city in the state in terms of population, second only to the capital. Goiania, and the cities of Aparecida de Goiânia, Annapolis and green River. It is known as a city in the region around Brasília, due to its proximity to the Federal Capital (58 km) and to the GO/DF border.

Looking for new gold mines, the pioneer Antônio Bueno de Azevedo left Paracatu. On December 13, 1746, while resting sitting on the banks of a stream, he noticed that in the riverbed there were nuggets of gold. The following day, he festively erected a cross and dedicated the mines and the future village to Santa Luzia. The mines attracted so many people that in less than a year the camp had more than 10,000 people. The first mass was celebrated in 1746 by Father Luiz da Gama Mendonça and attended by more than 6,000 miners. Elevated to the category of Ecclesiastical District, on December 6, 1758, its first vicar was Father Domingos Ramos.
In April 1758, the construction of a trench, called Saia Velha, began, to facilitate prospecting. The trench was 42 kilometers long and was made in two years by thousands of black slaves.
The first settlement nucleus was already called Arraial de Santa Luzia at the end of the 18th century.
The camp was elevated to the category of village on April 1, 1833 and city on October 5, 1867. On December 31, 1943 it was renamed Luziânia.
In Luziânia the last free man in Brazil was executed before the abolition of the death penalty. José Pereira da Silva was hanged in the then village of Santa Luzia on October 30, 1861.
