Mount Haku sits on the border of Ishikawa and Chūbu prefectures in central Japan and forms the centerpiece of the park. It is an active volcano high 2 702 m. It is a popular hiking destination and one of the Three famous mountains from Japan. The best seasons to visit are late summer and fall when the mountain is most scenic.
Flora and fauna
Mount Haku is known for the diversity of its floral life. There are various types of alpine plants in the surrounding area, including the black lily, the symbolic plant of Ishikawa. The golden eagle, Ishikawa's symbolic animal, lives on the slopes of Mount Haku. The rock ptarmigan, a representative bird of Gifu prefecture, also lived there, but during the Meiji period (1868-1912) its population completely disappeared there while it remains abundant elsewhere in Japan. More information on the flora, fauna and history of Mount Haku can be found at the Mount Haku Nature Center.
