To know
It is the largest national park in the world. In January 1977 the park was designated as biosphere reserve (well protected byUNESCO). It is managed by the Greenlandic Department of Environment and Nature.
Geographical notes
Greenland is a very mountainous country, where the valleys are often a few thousand meters deep. Glaciers and fjords dominate the glacial valleys. However, inland, an ice cap covers the surface of Greenland, creating flat terrain at a height of several thousand meters.
Flora and fauna
Due to its northern location, plants and animals in the Northeast Greenland National Park are limited. There is an estimated population of musk ox in the park and many polar bears and walruses live in the coastal areas. Other mammals present are the arctic fox, ermine, collared lemming and arctic hare. Marine mammals include the ringed seal, bearded seal, harp seal and hooded seal, along with the narwhal and white whale. Bird species found in the park include rooks, bumpy goose, pink-footed geese, common eider, king eider, gyrfalcon, snowy owl, sandpiper, ptarmigan and ravens.
When to go
All of northern Greenland is cold. However, the coldest regions of Greenland are the inland regions, which are the coldest due to the high elevation. For example, a Summit Camp, temperatures regularly drop below -20 ° C.
Background
The park was created in 1974, although it has since been expanded from its original size.

How to get around
