Regions
Towns
- Corinth, base for Mycenae - The ruins of one of the first civilizations of Greece.
- Gytheion - A small fishing village. Good seafood restaurants, with a good number of beaches close by, mainly frequented by locals. About 30 km away are the caves of Pyrgos Dirou (also called "Dyrgos"), a large underground system of limestone caves, which can be visited by boat. Legend has it that this is where Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman of her time, sparked the Trojan War.
- Kalamata - Main city of the province of Messinia. Famous for its olives, but also a pleasant town with an attractive seafront and stylish new marina.
- Monemvassia - The "Rock of Gibraltar" of Greece. The old walled city is beautifully situated and has a maze of small streets. The upper town, reached by an upwards winding path, is still in ruins, but worth a visit at least for the view.
- Nafplion, A good base from which to explore the area, including Epidaurus, the largest open-air amphitheater with perfect acoustics. If you sit in the top row, you can hear a pin drop on the stage, literally. In summer, plays from ancient times are staged.
- Antique Olympia - "Birthplace" of the Olympics.
- Patras - Rather nondescript town. Main arrival/departure place for ferries to and from Italy and the Ionian Islands.
- Pylos - Very interesting city in the southwest. Lots of French style buildings, as well as a marina and a gloriously shaded square.
- Sparta, This historic city has a population of approximately 10,000. There are two main roads, which makes finding the way easy. To the west of the city is the beautiful Taygetos Mountains, the Byzantine city Mystras is only a 15 minute drive away. It has rele which are worth a visit. There is a museum in Sparta with some finds.
