Lesser Antilles - Pequenas Antilhas


At Lesser Antilles form a region of the Caribbean. They are formed by the peaks of 18 volcanoes, arranged for more than 700 km, in the meeting zone of the tectonic plates of the Caribbean and the South America. They are also known as Leeward Islands (the ones further north) and Windward Islands (further south). Sometimes the southern part of the Netherlands Antilles (Bonaire and Curacao), Aruba and also Trinidad and Tobago they are not classified as belonging to the region.

These territories were disputed, over the centuries, by Spain, France, England and Netherlands, of which they were or still are colonies. The independence of most of them took place between the 1960s and 1980s.
